speed metal vs thrash metal

I've often been curious as to the delineation between the genres, too, as they seem to blur frequently. I mean, is it just based on the use of palm muting, or is there a clear difference in riffing techniques? Is speed metal inclusive, and so long is a song is reaching a certain BPM, would it be speed metal, i.e., Dead Skin Mask is thrash but the slowness makes it clearly not speed metal. Would songs like Show No Mercy or Angel of Death then be both speed and thrash metal?

I suppose Speed Metal and be used as a blanket term, and in a sense all extreme genres that utilize rapid playing have elements of Speed Metal, but I look at it personally as a separate genre that often gets blurred between the lines of Power Metal and Thrash Metal. I wouldn't know how to put it in musical terms, but there does seem to be a certain way of playing that generally differentiates the styles. I guess the most often cited bands would be Helloween circa Walls Of Jericho, Running Wild, Grave Digger, Rage, Stormwarrior, etc. Then if you look into the Thrash genre, especially in the early days, you can see a ton of direct Speed Metal influence, from the debuts of Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, and even Kreator. I think the clearest example of this is Whiplash - Power And Pain. A friend of mine actually just started up a band in this vein, oddly enough, maybe some of you that are into this style would be interested. It's called Eliminator, and they have two demo tracks up now, and plan on recording a 5-6 song EP in July.

If you listen and go 'HEY SPEED METAL RARGH!' it's speed metal, if you go 'YES THRASHING TERROR!' it's thrash metal.

Well what Tully says is closer to the truth, you just get a different feeling from each one of them.
Thrash is simply more raw, rough, harsh and violent than speed metal. Less melodic, most of the times too. That's at least how i see it and distinguish these 2 if i have to.

In my book some of the finest Speed metal albums are Killing is my business... and Helloween's S/T EP..

What's the best Grave Digger album? They sounded good from those youtube videos someone posted a while back.

Speed metal borders with Old School Metal and Power Metal ... but Thrash originates from Punk

that's the way i hear it

My personal favorite is Excalibur, though I haven't heard the early 90s albums.

Seriously, check this out, I'm amazed at how competent this actually is, it's really quite good.

great music with horrendous vocals.

was this recorded in 1982? with today's cheap technology, there is no excuse for a recording sounding like this

Like I said, it's a demo recording that they just put up as soon as they were done recording it (two days ago). The EP will be recorded in an actual studio, as opposed to a portable 8 track like this is.
