ok, haters gonna hate, but,

i just listened to st.anger again for the first time in years, and i'm asking myself the question, why do we hate it?

some tracks are pretty dull, but unnamed feeling, all within my hands, invisible kid, are all awesome tracks.. if not a bit long.

discuss.

I kind of like it.

I think a lot on here will hate it for the production, if I'm not mistaken, and the high hopes they had for the album that were not met.

All within my hands acoustic is awesome, so is Disposable Heroes (sorry that's off topic). The album resonated with my teenage angsty-self when it came out, since then I've gone through loving it and hating it.

I think it comes down to you either take the leap and understand what they were trying to do (rough and dirty to match the album's spirit) or you stop short of that and realize it's just a pro tools-intense jam session recorded with radio shack mics. At least the bass mix on STANGER was slightly better than on Justice.

too bad cliff didn't play on justice

stanger would have been so much better if the songs were cut in half and lars played on a real kit instead of trashcans. the whole "lets repeat a riff 16x" deal wore thin after the first song.

since it is expected that i come into most topics and offer up an alternative viewpoint that completely clashes with the general opinion just to be awkward, i feel i should not dissapoint now that there is a st anger topic.

st anger is the best thing metallica ever did. most of their music comes off as stale, uninspired and boring as fuck to me, then they went and made this album where they just channelled all their rage and anger into a bunch of tracks that may not be big or clever or progressive or nice sounding, but it's genuine, and i respect the fuck out of that.
i'll take genuine shit over shit where you can hear they were trying too hard to be clever any day of the week.

It's funny how diverse opinions can be, because in fact I think that St. Anger sounds very uninspired and forced to me.

It's like they where trying to fit in a trend they were never into and couldn't understand well enough. All I can listen there is nonexistent production values, terrible drumming (Lars was never brilliant but at least he was musical... until this), dumbed-down emo lyrics, and a compilation of the most abominable pseudo nu-metal riffs mankind has ever seen.

It may sound quite extreme, but that's the way I feel about it. Of course, YMMV.

1+ My thoughts exactly.
For me it seems like they were trying too hard to be angry and going "back to roots".

but they WERE fucking angry, these guys are barely evolved from neanderthals, I mean look at lars, caveman drummer extraordinaire.

St. Anger was an album that you bought because it was Metallica. Most people only listen to it once (me included) and then forgot it even existed. Same thing with Death Magnetic (Hetfield's vocals were horrible).

I'll just add that I like only load, reload and garage inc.

I dig southern stuff, not a big fan of thrash though...

Oh, and yeah, st. anger was absolutely terrible.
