There's definitely a difference between mainstream rap and underground rap but they're both still rap and both are built around the basis of the genre so it's understandable if one still doesn't like rap underground or mainstream. I personally can take rap in small doses (speaking of underground rap of course) but it just doesn't do it for me like metal does.

so say a rap fan listened to fucking... i dunno, some metal crap that's totally lame, and they didn't like it. most likely, the real problem was that the music is just of shit quality, but since they have no other standard to judge by, they'd say "oh i don't like that loud shit". if you played them somthing with the same distorted guitars and growled vocals, but something of much higher quality, they may actually enjoy it.

of course the shitty mainstream/terrible rappers you've prolly heard as a metal fan won't catch your ear. cos they suck anyways. but if you heard a really amazing mc, you'd hear the same thing about them that makes rap fans like them, i'd bet.

Oh, what a cliche topic. I don't even bother trying to get people to understand heavy metal. It's a big waste of time.

Obviously, metal would be not understood by the mainstream because it is a counterculture. The whole purpose of it is to question mainstream values. It will have its own set of codes, symbolism, and idealogies that its members understand in some level. On the other hand, getting too into this culture will make you some what desensitized to it after being exposed to it so much. For example, an image of a skull to a metal head would not be as shocking. It may not even mean as a symbol for death but something else.

Most people can not understand anything besides image especially when it comes to something foreign. They usually just slap on a convenient label out of fear or just plain apathy.

As far as I'm concerned, whoever is driving makes the rules because you want them to have as few distractions as possible. Listening to your mother's music could cause you to lose focus and crash the car.
