Authentic Metalhead said:Busdriver and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien are a good choice for underground rap. The former is quite abstract and the latter is amusing.

I personally can take rap in small doses (speaking of underground rap of course) but it just doesn't do it for me like metal does.
MURAI said:Oh, what a cliche topic. I don't even bother trying to get people to understand heavy metal. It's a big waste of time.
Obviously, metal would be not understood by the mainstream because it is a counterculture. The whole purpose of it is to question mainstream values. It will have its own set of codes, symbolism, and idealogies that its members understand in some level. On the other hand, getting too into this culture will make you some what desensitized to it after being exposed to it so much. For example, an image of a skull to a metal head would not be as shocking. It may not even mean as a symbol for death but something else.
Most people can not understand anything besides image especially when it comes to something foreign. They usually just slap on a convenient label out of fear or just plain apathy.
