The best cd of 2002 so far is...

Everyone always says that Green Carnation came out in 2001, but I've double and triple checked numerous sources to confirm that it came out on January 8th, 2002, so I'm keeping it on my list.

I too thought it came out in 2001.

For me it would have to be Immortal 'Sons of Northern Darkness' and Arcturus 'The Sham Mirrors', and Taake '....Bjoergvin....'

In this order, the top five so far are as follows:

1. Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
2. Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
3. Atrox - Terrestrials
4. Vintersorg - Visions From The Spiral Generator
5. Agalloch - The Mantle

Of course, this will all change rather rapidly with the release of the new Opeth.

Other honorable mentions are: December - The Lament Configurations, Darkane - Expanding Senses, ...And Oceans - Cypher, & Borknagar - Empiricism (I'm pretty sure that it was a 2002 release, at least in the US).

1. Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
2. Down - II
3. Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
4. Bad Religion - The process of Belief
5. Cephalic Carnage - Lucid Interval

my copy of Oceanic came in yesterday and i've listened to it about six times now. i have to say it exceeded my expectations. like all their previous releases this one is a masterpiece. Oceanic comes off as being more focused and refined than Celestial. the dense fluid harmonics are off the charts on this one. it's like one massive orgasmic crescendo. my list to date follows:

ISIS - Oceanic
Cephalic Carnage - Lucid Interval
Susperia - Vindicaton
Nile - In Their Darkest Shrines
Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness
Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos
Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Shadows Fall - The Art of Balance
Down II
Vintersorg - Visions. . .

my evergrowing list is:

Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera
In Flames - Reroute to Remain
Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin
Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos

I recently got the new Nile, and being a fan of the more melodic side of death metal, found it too abrasive and chaotic sounding :[

I like the epicness (is that a word?) of some tracks, and the drumming is simply incredible, but the song structure, guitarwork, and vocals sound very primitive and unfocused...i'm trying hard to like it but i just can't :|

Persephone - Home
Chaostar - Threnody
Nenia C'alladhan - s/t
Shinjuku Thief - The Witch Haven
Empyrium - Weiland
Sophia - The Seduction of Madness

Dark Tranquillity, Vintersorg, In Flames, Blind Guardian and Arcturus kinda disappointed me.

I forgot a couple-
Dream Theater-Six Degrees...
Theory in Practice-Colonizing the Sun (this cd rules!)

I just picked up And Oceans-Cypher today, I gotta listen to it more though.

What is all this about the band ISIS? What are they like?

With so many bands putting out great releases this year it is difficult to pick just one, so here is my Hall of Fame 2002 (so far):

In no particular order

Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Sentenced - The Cold White Light
Dimension Zero - Silent Night Fever
Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos
In Flames - Reroute to Remain
Jerry Cantrell - Degradation Trip

Jerry is not necessarily metal, just heavy, dark, and a songwriting superstar - he's the man.

Insomnium "In the halls of awaiting"
Sentenced "The cold white light"
Arcturus "The sham mirrors"
Nile "In their darkened shrines"
Norther "Dreams of endless war"
are my favourites thus far.
