The Books/Reading Thread

My latest book haul:

Guns, Germs & Steel - Jared Diamond
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams
The End of Faith - Sam Harris
Letter to a Christian Nation - Sam Harris

I didn't like this that much. When he was writing against faith he just dismissed it offhand. While this is should be what rational people do, but obviously most people won't follow him and the book becomes useless. His part promoting Eastern religion was also a little :erk: for me

I'm only about 60 pages so its a little early to judge. I do however detect what you mentioned. So far he overemphasizes Jainism as the be all, end all moral philosophy. It doesn't matter how benign a philsophy is, it all depends on how it is being used. This may be another 'preaching to choir' book but it is still enjoyable. Shermer and Dawkins are still my favorites.

looking through blood meridian again, I conclude that it still rules

also, while Philip Roth sometimes feel disturbingly autobiographical, his prose style dominates

not digging Foucault's Pendulum, which is odd seeing as I loved House of Leaves

also The Oresteia is cool

I couldn't get past the first sixty pages of Foucault's Pendulum. It's tough. perhaps I'll pick it up again sometime

and blood meridian (along with pretty much any Cormac McCarthy novel) fucking rules.

i have foucault's pendulum sitting on my shelf, i love the name of the rose so i'll definitely be reading it

i have two mccarthy books, blood meridian and the road, also yet to read them

the oresteia is cool i agree

who do you people favour out of the three athenian tragedians? i'm gonna have to go with sophocles

Where the hell is grammar man when you need him :(

Anyway, I bought the God Delusion a while ago, and read like 80 pages of it. I put it down because I was just thinking to myself,
"Yeah... I already agree with everything I've read so far and have heard of it all..."
To me, it's like buying a book telling you you're a human.

Yeah, not sure what I was thinking with that sentence. I kind of felt the same way about the God Delusion, but it was exhilarating to see a popular book voicing everything I knew. Also there are some interesting scientific things later in the book.

I'm thinking about buying that book. I saw it at Borders yesterday but already had a bunch of Stephen King books ready to purchase.

Stephen King rocks. He went to my school, in case you didn't know. I'd say Pet Sematary is his best work. Creepy how its set right in the forests right outside of campus here. I believe there's a part of the book where a guy walks into the campus medical center with half his head missing and he collapses to the floor.
