The Books/Reading Thread

I got "The Game" by Neil Strauss for Christmas. I've been taking my time to read through it & it's a really good book. It's a true story about a guy who goes from being an average non-social kind of guy to being a suave pick-up artist who learns all kinds of ways to quickly seduce women no matter how far out of his league they may seem.

That book is gay imo. I haven't read it but I have read quite a few long reviews of it on internet forums by people who thinks they now possess the ultimate knowledge how to seduce women. I am the way I am and if girls likes me that is cool and all and if they don't, well though luck for me I'm not going to fall into some pattern because I get laid more. I think doing that is desperate as hell.

Good post. "Game" seems little more than having a sense of humor and not coming off as desperate. This guy has sold a ton of books telling people how to fake that.

Fucking DOT

The amount of times you get laid shouldn't validate your existence.

You didn't seem like you were having problems picking up girls in the confessional thread... 300$ seemed like a good way to seduce a girl for you.

Finished it. Awesome book, interesting ending, some nice twists. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't read it, but I recommend it to all fantasy fans.

Sadly I won't have much time for reading over the next few months, but nevertheless I'm going to make a start on Ravenor by Dan Abnett, given that I really enjoyed Eisenhorn.

Dug up a certain 'Sword of Shannara' by Terry Brooks today. I'll start it tonight, having just finished 'Eisenhorn' by Dan Abnett.

.

That was the first ever SHannara, or fantasy, book I ever read, about 17 years ago when I was 13 or so. My pal got it as a present and I took the piss out of him mercilessly for reading such a gay looking book, with dwarves and shit in it.
I read it after him and couldn't believe how good it was. The other books in the original trilogy are good too, but none of his other books really amount to very much.

If you like fantasy, try the three "Twins" books, the Dragonlance ones. They're fucking great.

I forgot about those!
Yeah, I've read them... pure awesome.
David Eddings and David Gemmell are also masters of fantasy. Terry Pratchett, too, but its hard to take his books seriously.

The gem that glitters in the dark is, however, Gary Gygax, the creator of D+D. His novels are awesome.

Speaking of Fantasy I have never read much of the genre outside The Hobbit and LotR--infact none at all really. However, my cousin loaned me a book he had called 'The Mask of the Sorcerer' by Darrel Schweitzer(sp?), he said it was one of the best books he has read but I am looking for other opinions on it (without spoilers please).

I LOVE the general idea of fantasy - elves, dragons, dwarves, all that shit. But I find almost every book that uses that theme is a pile of childish nonsense. Yeah, I know, they're rather childish ideas, but come on - I'm sick of all these women authors doing bad romantic fantasy. It's shite.
What I want is a dark, adult themed fantasy, not some twee crap where dragons are best pals with little girls and boys. Fuck that.

If you want a dark, violent fantasy, where the hero is an anti-hero, try this. It's the best fantasy book I've read in years and years.

Monument - by Ian Graham. I wish the guy would hurry up and write something else.

BTW Terry Pratchett has some form of senile dementia, so he may not be writing for very much longer. It's a real shame, while many of his books are boring crap, lots of them are a great read.

I dont get it with either Eddings or Gemmell. Neither of them really do it for me. Robert Jordan's books are okay, but nothing great.
I seem to have an idea of how fantasy SHOULD be done, but cant find anything that matches it. Yeah, I know, I should write it myself, but it's hard to find the time.

I don't really like fantasy outside of The Lord of the Rings...it seems kind of pointless. I have a few books that I've only read small amounts from that didn't interest me. I read The Deed Of Paksenarion trilogy or whatever it's called, which was mildly interesting, involving a (girl?) joining a mercenary life fighting for different people, etc. The only other 'fantasy' I'm interested is the weird fiction type of stuff from Lovecraft, Howard, Machen, Dunsany, Blackwood, etc.

Most fantasy sucks imo. There are some occasional jewels in the rough, but I usually stick with sci-fi, horror type stuff. I also love historical fiction.
