How are they not easier to tell apart? They are because they wore costumes so if you knew what costumes they wore then you know who it is. Plus alot of them had their own little trademark looks.

But new bands don't have costumes, they could be wearing different street clothes every night, so how do you know who is who?

Honestly - tell me its not easier to tell Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, Van Halen & Guns N Roses apart than it is to tell um The Vines, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Jet, etc apart.

The Strokes all wear Tuxedos outfits, The White Stripes dress in red and white, and The Vines and Jet wear 2nd hand castoffs from 1975.

Yeah Axl & Bret Michaels (and Stevie from Tuff too) all had the same look. How can you even think about including a Shout At The Devil photo in their too? You'd know just from the pentagram headband that it's Vince Neil, not to mention the costume! Who else wore studded black & red leather with straps everywhere and platform boots? Motley's "Shout" image is one of the most easily identifiable images ever.

The point is... I never said hair bands didn't all look the same as well. I even said they DO. I just said, the fact that their clothes are more outrageous means that you take more notice of them, and they end up having certain trademarks that are easy to identify because of it.

Maybe those bands I mentioned weren't good example (I don't even know what they look like so I just chose a few at random) but you get my point. No need to split hairs... the fact is that new bands' images don't jump out at you, which makes them less noticable, which means they are harder to tell apart because you don't instantly recognise their trademarks if they have any.

Thats because theres really only 7 rap artists, they all just do guest spots in each others videos so it looks like theres a lot more of them!

To an extent Trent. But anyone outside the scene or with only a fleeting interest in it wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Just like Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer and Testament were all different to us metal freaks, but other people would have just seen four bands made up of reprobate-looking types without knowing one from another.

I know that's the same with anything.

But I think the degree of difference, even if alot of people still can't tell them apart, is still more in the "hair" scene than it is in today's scene. Nobody would think the band in the Looks That Kill video clip looks anything like the band in the Unskinny Bop video, or that the band in the Jump video clip looks anything like the guys in the Sweet Child O Mine video.

Why? Because every band was going out of their way to look outrageous and stand out. Even if by 1989 all the new bands started looking the same as each other, the fact is that there are alot more bands that stood out because everybody was trying to.

Now nobody tries to look different and outrageous & stand out. You can't deny that...
