The Most Technical Band

A more detailed list:

Technical and Accessible

Dream Theater, Opeth, Spiral Architect, Green Carnation, Angra, Cynic, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation, Outworld, etc.

Technical but crap

To-Mera for one. Overrated to the extreme by the people who post in the band's forum.

When you guys talk technicality, are you just talking about technical guitar work? Because many of the technical bands aren't very technical in aspects other than the guitar work.

Uhh... that's what is generally meant by technical - physical skill required to play. It doesn't make sense to talk of technical emotion, structure or energy of a song.

that's not what he was talking about. He was asking whether the thread was exclusively about technical guitar work or all around technical wizardry (bass and drums as well as guitar, maybe even keyboards)

Actually, the comment is absurd. In the context of the question, It makes no sense to separate a composition into separate parts according to what each instrument plays.

Composition can be technical without individual instruments being technical in themselves. But I agree with you that the question was absurd given the context of this thread and traditionally, talking about technicality in metal revolves around the kind of bands previously discussed.

you mean composition can be complex without technique being complex?

saying something is technical implies a high level of instrumental proficiency.
