The Official Star Wars Thread

All the mythology and general backstory of the series, as well as technology and people, are pretty interesting to me tbh. But I would have to agree that the main stories told in the six movies are not so great. I can imagine for the newest trilogy, the producers were thinking, "Alright! We've got all this awesome looking special effects technology! But fuck, we have to write a story around it, shit."

Star Wars is obviously the best movie out of them. The battle against the death star is really cool and I used to know every line in it. :p

Empire Strikes Back is the second best, interesting plot twists but lacks the space battles which are my favourites. The problem with Return of the Jedi though is that the big battle part is firstly cut up in three different battles taking place at the same time which is annoying to watch, I want one at a time. Secondly the battle in the first movie is much more personal with cool lines like "Stabilize your rear reflectors, watch for enemy fighters" and you mourn every pilots deaths like they are really important. In The Return of the Jedi there are just LOTS of ships fighting and you don't really care what happens until they start moving inside the death star.

It's called A New hope.

The story is absolutely amazing. You should know that.
It's a magical journey through the entire spectrum of human emotion. You can experience the lowest points of life and the highest just in watching this incredible journey. *sheds a tear*

I never saw the original trilogy.
faggot
Frankly, the only reason to watch them is because they're so prolific that you'll miss a lot in non-Star Wars related conversations. The movies themselves don't really have much going for them. Bad special effects, bad acting, generic story, etc...true, it may have been the orignial sci fi movie, or the original generic story, and the special effects weren't their fault because special effects sucked back then but I really don't care. Regardless of the reasons, a mediocre movie is a mediocre movie...so Nec, I would recommend watching the original trilogy, but don't expect much...

You are retarded.

The original trilogy is so much a part of my childhood, the two are inseparable. In Elementary school I new all the lines to all three movies. I had the toys, the bed sheets, all of it.

I love the lightsaber fight in Jedi. It is my favorite of all 6 movies. When Luke freaks out and starts slamming on Vader and then cuts his hand off being the best part. It is so fucking epic.

If you don;t like the original trilogy you are a faggot to the highest degree.

^ man I have to totally agree there. Star Wars is the fucking shit, if one were to never watch sci-fi, Star Wars and Bladerunner are the movies they should still see.

I can remember when ROTJ was released - I hadn't migrated to Australia yet, we were still in England. Even fanatical fans at a Maiden concert could not rival what I saw on the way to the cinemas in Brighton. Carloads of families and fans were hooting each other all the way there, it was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen in my life.

Sci-Fi is imo when it is about humans (from earth) that has developed science that doesn't exist irl, like in Alien or The X-Files. Fantasy is when it is a whole fictional world with fictional creatures etc inhabiting it. Well that's how I view it anyways. They are very overlapping genres though.

A friend of mine had an interesting observation about Star Wars, and a thought that would have made the whole thing much cooler.

Now, Luke is living with his Aunt and Uncle, having been placed there by Obi Wan Kenobi to hide him from Vader. Right? Right. Now, think about how awful a job of hiding him that is. He goes to live with relatives that Vader already knows, on Vader's old home planet and he keep his given name. Absolutely zero attempt is made to actually "hide" him.

Now, Leia, on the other hand... Vader didn't know there would be two children, so hiding Leia was a bit easier. They put her on a different planet with a different family and a different name. She spent her life training in intergalactic diplomacy and working with the rebellion, while Luke spent his life working down on the farm.

Wouldn't the movie have been a thousand times cool if the Jedi had intended for Luke to be killed, thus leading Vader to believe that no real threat to the Empire remained and allowing for Leia to step up and become the true hero. Just imagine if, in Empire, Luke really does fail at his training with Yoda, and is then killed by Vader. In Jedi it would turn out that Leia was really the powerful one.

That would have been so fucking cool, and it would look as if the whole thing had really been written and thought out before the movies were made.

Yeah, I've seen a couple documentaries surrounding the influences that went into the historical background of the movies, which are much more interesting than the movies themselves.
