The official UMOS NWOBHM tread!!

I don't have a very big NWOBHM collection, but here are bands that i have and i dig very much. Long live the NWOBHM!

IRON MAIDEN
DIAMOND HEAD
ANGEL WITCH
SAXON
DEF LEPPARD
VENOM
RAVEN
TYGERS OF PAN TANG

Angel Witch being my favorite, for the record. I fucking love their debut.

Some of the bands I like most are Angel Witch, Chateaux, Diamond Head, Jaguar, Raven, Stampede, Legend, Tysondog, Witchfynder General, Tokyo Blade, Satan, etc..
I think it's unfortunatly some of the greatest NWOBHM bands at one time messed up with a horrible record, like Jaguar (This time) , Hellanbach (The big H), Diamond Head (Canterburry)and Angel Witch (Screaming 'n Bleeding).
Impressive list of bands you saw live Princess ot Night !!! Wished I had seen so many !!!

Yeah, princess 2112 has only posted a few times on UMOS, but I think I'm already falling in love. She has excellent taste in music, she writes long posts (like me!), and I find the Scottish accent extremely sexy. Not to mention she could take me back to school in the NWOBHM category, and probably revive long hidden memories in the far recesses of my mind. I've killed alot of brain cells in my life, but none more than I did in the 80s when I was young and full of piss and vinegar (okay, technically it was drugs and alcohol!).

Thanks Trans, I just love it when someone says I've got excellent taste in music. And I love you too, in fact I absolutely love everyone who loves nwobhm, they are the best fans ever!!!!

When I look over my list of nwobhm bands that I've seen, it does look quite impressive but I really was just in the right place at the right time and I think at the time I just took it for granted seeing all those bands cos that's what me and my pals always did, was just going round various venues checking out all these new bands and it was such a superior time. If I had lived outwith the UK, I probably would only have seen maybe only a handful of those bands, so I know I was extremely lucky to have seen so many.

Most of those bands I saw at least twice. My fav nwobhm bands were always Diamond Head and Angel Witch as joint favourites, followed by Saxon, Girlschool, Praying Mantis and Tank. I saw Diamond Head about 5 times, Angel Witch 3 times, Saxon about 5 times, Praying Mantis 3 times and Tank twice. And it's truly amazing that I remember them all as well cos it was such a long time ago but I remember every single gig as if it was just like a few years ago. The strange thing is I saw Thin Lizzy (not nwobhm I know) at the start of this year and I can hardly remember much about that concert at all, only remember about 4 songs but I was totally flying so that probably explains why it's all a bit hazy but but from what I remember they were still good.

I'll really need to get a few more Angel Witch patches for my jacket cos they are one of my fav bands but I've only got the onepatch on the back of my jacket. I've got 3 Diamond Head patches on the back of it with another DH patch on the front. On one sleeve, I've got a Saxon Destiny patch and on the other sleeve I've got a Saxon Power & The Glory patch, on front of jacket I've got a Saxon Strong Arm of the Law patch and on the back I've got another 2 Saxon patches. I've got one Girlschool patch on my sleeve but do not have any Prayint Mantis patches or badges. Hmmm will need to check out ebay and see if I can see any, right enough I've not really got any room for any more patches!!!!! I got a photo taken last month in the pub before I went through to Edinburgh to see Saxon, I'll need to stick it on here and let you all see it. It's sideon photo, so I don't think you can see very much nwobhm patches but I got another photo taken with Greig T. Walker (Blackfoot) and you can see a Diamond Head patch in that photo, cos I went to see Blackfoot in Glasgow on 30th July this year, got as far as the venue only to be told the concert has been pulled at the last minute cos of noise restrictions in place at The Ferry and when Blackfoot did sound check they apparently went over the permitted noise level and the management didn't let them play. I was totally gutted, I'm not into much Southern bands, but I think Blackfoot are superb. Anyway went back to the pub to drown my sorrows and as soon as I walked in Highway Song started playing, so that actually made matters worse. Later on that night, Blackfoot came into the pub to sign autographs and get photos taken with their fans. I couldn't believe it when I came out of the loo to see Greig T. Walker just standing there by himself, so I just walked right on up to him and in my excitement I couldn't even remember his name. I just said to him the classic line "Hey are you that guy from Blackfoot" LOL. It was quite obvious that he was cos he was wearing the headband with the word BLACKFOOT emblazoned across it!!!!!

Stranded (GLASGOW)

Glasgow was another band I saw, they used to play in The Burns Howff in Glasgow and I saw them at least twice, they were really good. I also saw a band called Hazzard play there a few times as well, they were excellent, I don't know if any of you heard them but I've still got their single Snake in the Grass/Kicked to the Ground, it's signed by all the band members. I didn't have to buy it though, they were just handing them out at the end of the concert.

Um, princess, you might want to think about starting up a second jacket. Just to handle the patch overload!

It's too bad you didn't appreciate all those concerts back in the day, but at least your memories are still strong and you appreciate them now. Funny how you take things for granted when you're young. My formative metal years (age 17-23) were spent in Idaho, and that place was a concert wasteland. We'd be lucky to get 5 or 6 concerts all year, and even luckier if half those were ever worth seeing. In fact, we often had to drive half a day to Salt Lake City, Utah for concerts. I just can't imagine what it would be like to live in a land where the concerts or 5 or 6 per week!

What's the deal with Thin Lizzy? I didn't know they were re-formed and touring. I don't see how they can be, it ain't Thin Lizzy without Phil Lynott, and unless they've got new resurrection technologies in your neck of the woods, I doubt Phil was there!

LOL well funnily enough Trans I do have a spare levi jacket that I haven't customised yet. There is not one single patch or badge on it, in fact I never ever wear it, I'm just keeping it as a spare one in case my patchwork jacket ever gets stolen. It's got to the stage that I'm scared to take it off in a pub or concert cos it would probably cost me £350 to replace all those badges and patches!!!!

I did really appreciate seeing all those bands years ago and getting to see about 5 or 6 bands a week was fantastic. I just thought it was always going to be like that, but one by one the various venues where those bands played closed down, like The Glagow Apollo,Bungalow Bar, Burns Howff, The Dial Inn. Nowadays I still go see bands but it only maybe about 2 main bands a month that I see, although I see pub bands quite a lot cos my local pub in town has bands on about 4 times a week, some of the rock bands are quite good but sometimes its music like The Stray Cats and stuff which I'm not into at all.

About Thin lizzy, well thats another wee story. I was never really a massive fan of TL but I went to see Whitesnake in December, seen them loads of times before but I always had the hots for Coverdale, so really just wanted to check him out again. However as soon as I saw the bass player,Marco Mendoza, I hardly gave Coverdale a second glance. I was in total awe of this guy, he just looked ultra delicious and then I heard he was also bass player for Thin Lizzy and they were playing the following month, so that was the reason why I went along to see Thin Lizzy. They were very good, it was John Sykes singing with them, and I would definitely go see them again.

LOL is that the only 2 nwobhm bands you've seen or is that the only 2 albums you've got. You should get a hold of Angel Witch's first album, it's been re-released with the original 10 songs plus 10 bonus tracks including the mindblowing Baphomet, you'd love it. And Diamond Head's Lightening to the Nations CD, its amazing. And you can't go wrong with Metal For Muthas 1 & 2, some of the best nwobhm songs are on those 2 cds - Trespass One of These Days and Stormchild - awesome songs.

I forgot to mention that I've seen Maiden as well, I like them but they were never really one of my favourite bands. Saxon are supposed to be doing a US tour in March, so you might be able to get to see Saxon again if they play near you. They're playing in Glasgow this spring, so I'll see them again - you can never have enough Saxon that's what I say.

those are the only 2 ive seen...i love NWOBHM...i jsut turned 14 thats why ive only seen them...my favorite ones.

That's impressive Princess of the Night!

My 10 favorite NWOBHM records would be :

Iron Maiden - Killers
Angel Witch - Angel Witch
Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations
Saxon - Strong Arm of the Law
Demon - The Unexpected Guest
Blitzkrieg - Time of Changes
Satan - Court in the Act
Venom - Welcome to Hell
Raven - All for One
Tokyo Blade - Tokyo Blade

Also some Tank, Grim Reaper, Witchfynde, Jaguar, Cloven Hoof and Tygers.
I don't consider Quartz NWOBHM though, since they were already rocking before the NWOBHM days...

Oh if we go to records they'll be (counting NWOBHM 1979-1985):

Angel Witch - "Angel Witch"
Saxon - "Power & The Glory"
Tokyo Blade - "Tokyo Blade"
Demon - "The Unexpected Guest"
Iron Maiden - "Piece Of Mind"
Def Leppard - "High'N'Dry"

NP: Sieges Even - 'Sequence IV: Stigmata"

That's true enough Quartz were rocking from the late 70s I think, although I didn't see them in the 70s, it would have been some time in the 80s that I got to see them. There's probably a few bands on my list that actually started in the late 70s, I definitely know Saxon were together before 1980 cos their first album came out in 1979. And I'm quite sure that Girlschool as well were together before 1980, I seem to remember reading somehwere that they started the band way back in 1978 but I'm not 100% sure, I could be getting mixed up with another band.

Quartz debut is from 77, so like Motorhead they can't be considered strictly part of the NWOBHM. Nevertheless "Stand Up And Fight" fits inside the current of albums that characterized the era.

And yes 2112 many bands actually astarted before 1980 including Iron Maiden, and moreover Diamond Head and Saxon debuts are from 1979 still they are considered as NWOBHM.

Sometimes the crossline can be a bit fuzzy IMO.

A totally brilliant record, which has stood the test of time. Leppard is total garbage today (and has been for 20 years now), but their early records are essential.

Yes High n Dry is a superb album and I also really like their first album On Through The Night, I still think that one is brill with quite a few crackin songs on it - my fav Leppard song Wasted is on that album and it rocks bigtime:headbang: .

No matter how much youse like Def Leppard you cannot imagine just how appalling they were when I saw them at Reading Festival. I quite liked Leppard back then, not really into them much these days, but they were so chronic it was unreal. This was my first fest and I couldn't believe it when they got totally bottled right off the stage. They only sang about 4 songs and the next minute there were bottles and cans and various other things flying thorugh the air. They were really really bad but I'd been looking forward to seeing them and hearing them play Wasted but they only lasted for about 15 minutes on stage and they didn't even manage to play Wasted which was a big bummer. I saw them a few years later and they were like a completely different band.

I've never classed Motorhead as a NWOBHM band, although some folk do. They're still a great band whatever category you want to put them in and Lemmy is really a living legend in my view, as I said I just saw them a few weeks ago and for someone his age its unbelievable the amount of energy he's got on stage. I think he's something like 60 on Christmas Eve.

Well, that's the first I'd heard that Sykes had re-joined Thin Lizzy. And he's taken over vocal duties? Shocking! But cool.

You really should just start working on that second jacket, princess! If you have a strong back-up, maybe you won't be so paranoid about leaving either one laying around in public. I can almost picture you now, eating at a restaurant when mother nature comes calling. You automatically grab your jacket and take it with you to the restroom...while your purse still hangs forgotten on the back of the chair!

I didn't mention Def Leppard in my post because I have pretty much dismissed them. I still pull out High N Dry and On Through The Night from time to time, but mostly I ignore them. I thought they started going downhill with Pyromania (although it did have a few good songs on it). Hysteria on, :yuk:

Actually old news. Sykes reunited initially TL with Gorham, Downey and Wharton, picking Mendoza for the bass duties. I assumed Sykes like him after they played together in Blue Murder. Downey almost immediately bailed out and Tommy Aldridge was brought as the drummer.

I have a live album compilation with this line-up, and I called Tribute Lizzy, since there's NO WAY IN HEAVEN OR HELL that Thin Lizzy can exist without Phil Lynnot, and frankly without Brian Downey it's not even a decent tribute, looks more like Whitesnake/Blue Murder with Scott Gorham on guitars too.

BTW, there's a movie about Phil Lynnot on production, I'm waiting to see it.

NP: Jaguar - 'Mouth And Trousers'

I think if I was a hardcore Thin Lizzy fan I probably wouldn't have went to the concert to see them cos Phil wasn't there cos that would be like me going to see Rush without Geddy and that would be sacrilege. I always quite liked Thin Lizzy but to tell you the truth, I never owned one single album, although I'd heard most of their songs. A few weeks before the concert I went and bought some Greatest Hits CD and it was really good, so as I said I really only went to see them so I could feast my eyes on Marco Mendoza plus also my friend was looking for someone to go with, so I just agreed to go.

They were playing at Carling Academy and that holds about 3000 folk and it was completely sold out. I did sort of think it was like watching a Thin Lizzy tribute band and I know I said this before but see when Sykes was singing Boys are Back in Town, Killer on the Loose, Jailbreak, Cowboy Song if you closed your eyes you would have sworn it was Phil Lynott singing those songs, it was uncanny!!!!

LOL I did nearly have a heartattack one night cos I was waiting for the pal to arrive in the pub and I went to the loo and asked this couple who were standing next to me to keep an eye on my jacket. WhenI came out of the toilet, they were gone and so was my jacket. I very nearly keeled over but luckily I saw them sitting up the back and they had taken my jacket with them, thank God!!!!

Here's a few pics of it. First one a back view, everything is same apart from on the left beside the Zep patch there was a Saxon patch but I've moved that one round the front and in its place is an awesome Angel Witch patch:-

Okay....um....let's see...now what was I supposed to be looking at? Oh, yeah. The patches! Awesome jacket indeed, princess. It takes me back the days of my youth and brings back pleasant memories. Thanks for the pics, I can see why you treasure it so!
