The RC baby thread

Yes...that was my argument with the coworker yesterday. I cant remember what she said exactly but was something like a name is a personal choice and you shouldn't care what people think. My point was that people DO care and there have been studies that demonstrate negative outcomes for certain names. The ones ive seen were mostly about black names like Shamiqua but I can believe what you're saying too about the short names.

Found it. Here's a bit of it:

"In conducting the study, researchers took a closer look at how names can influence first impressions and decision-making. They found evidence of a "name pronunciation effect," in which people with easily pronounced names are viewed more positively by others. They noted, however, that most people are not even aware of this bias.

For instance, in a field study of 500 U.S. attorneys those with easy to pronounce names rose up in their firm's ranks faster than their colleagues with more difficult names.

The name bias probably extends to other professions as well, according to study co-leader Adam Alter, from the Stern School of Business. "People simply aren't aware of the subtle impact that names can have on their judgments," he explained in the news release.

The findings, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, could have implications for how bias and discrimination are managed in America, the researchers suggested.

"It's important to appreciate the subtle biases that shape our choices and judgments about others. Such an appreciation may help us de-bias our thinking, leading to fairer, more objective treatment of others," Laham said."

Iris is excellent!
Watson not so much. Some of these names need to be evaluated on an as-adult basis. As a 30 year old man do you want to be called Watson or Dakota or Trystan? Or Easton?

Thanks! We played "the occupations game" (sort of specific versions of as-adult evaluation) before deciding.

"Judge Trystan Smith presiding"
"Dr Dakota Smith will perform your appendectomy this afternoon"

etc :)

First one's named Iris, weighing two names for the second...
Make the second a Siri. I've got two friend-kids (completely unrelated to eachother) where one kid is named Siri and one Iris. I mix them up constantly and it would be a bitch if I was the kind of guy to think that such things sucked. So name the second Siri just to fuck with everyone.

Yah, young Afton was over here yesterday for a play date. Along with his friend Henry.

afton means evening in swedish and is a ridiculous thing to name a babby

Hmm...I wonder if they named him that deliberately. I just thought it was made up. Well, he kinda looks Swedish...whatever the fuck that means.
Still a bad name though.

i have this thing about trying to figure out how i can possibly love another child more/the same as my daughter.

how are you with multiple kids dealing with distilling the love?

love ain't quantifiable...have as many as you can

that said, I'm probably going to kill my middle one here very soon
