The Ron Paul appreciation thread!

It's the same idea that just because Mariah Carey has sold more records than AC/DC doesn't necessarily mean that she's musically better.

totally OT, but mariah carey blows ac/dc out of the water from a purely musical perspective

you're talking about the single greatest vocal range ever recorded by man vs. drunken aussies playing power chords and screeching into a mic

I love AC/DC, but as a classical singer, I have to back you. Bitch got a 5 octave range.

...and because she has a 5 octave range her music is better. ofc

Not really, I think we are speaking more from a point of personal preference here. From the standpoint of just having something to jam out to, I'd completely rather listen to AC/DC . From the perspective of vocal technique, I would prefer Mariah Carey. But that's the only time I'll listen to her. From what I've been told, she's a little diva bitch in person (despite the 5 octave range)

^like she said...although i'd much rather listen to ac/dc, mariah carey is one of the most uniquely and impressively talented vocalists to have ever lived. there's seriously no fucking with her within the context of musical talent/ability.

I am not denying her talent and ability, but just saying that it doesn't mean her music is better (talent=/= final output), and that is what you said in your previous post ('musical perspective'). Just as the number of sold albums is not really the music quality parameter, too, which was Trevoire's point.

Well, that is like saying "I like listen to Death because they make kickass songs, but from guitar technique perspective I would prefer >>enter random super tech band here<<, but that's the only time I'll listen to them", if you catch my drift ;)
What ultimately matters is the final output, not single ingredients, in my opinion anyway...(and AC/DC are better in my opinion too :) )

True dat. I understand what you are saying, I'm also speaking from the perspective of a music academic and a classical background, but I agree with you that final output is what matters.

Mariah Carey's mother was a well-respected soprano from Long Island, her singing career actually began with classical training. Classical singers are incredibly critical of themselves as well as one another: we are constantly analyzing voices, finding things that we like, what we'd like to emulate in our own voice, and what we'd do without. I know for myself I'm always listening to different singers (both classical and non). There are singers/songs that I really detest, but if I have to study them, I study. It becomes a very depersonalized experience musically, which is weird.

It doesn't help either that our body is our instrument; for an musician such as a guitarist or a pianist, there is a bit more physical disassociation.

Uum Kulthum is also crazy

Unfortunately this is a shit recording.

Um Kulthum had a contralto vocal range. She can sing as low as the 2nd octave, and has the ability to sing as high as 8th octave at her vocal peak. Her remarkable ability to produce 14,000 vibrations/second with her vocal cords, unparalleled vocal strength (no commercial mic for singing can withstand its strength forcing her to stand at 1-2meter radius away) her voice's unique breathtaking beauty over convention made her the most incomparable voice of all times.

And then you have stuff like this!
