The School/Uni Thread

I'll have to check with the girlfriend.

I'm officially done with applications today. I had to overnight a couple things, but I'm just relieved. I applied to:

University at Buffalo
Boston University
University of Chicago
University of Illinois at Chicago
University of Pennsylvania
University of Michigan
Yale
Harvard

The last two are pretty unrealistic. I figured if I'm going to get rejected, I'd rather have it be from a good school than a bad one. That, and career options are better if you attend a good school.

Good luck, Pat!

I have decided that for my fifth school I am applying to Emory for their PhD. program in Ancient History. My professor at UMaine has strong connections there. I only have two more apps to submit by the middle of January, and I'm already almost done with both.

I graduated in June from my post-grad program in Publishing. I interned over the summer at an ebook distributor/aggregator that represents many independent Canadian book publishers. They hired me on contract in September and I am just finishing up my fourth month as a "Digital Services Coordinator". Basically I run the DAM (Digital Asset Management System) and help publishers get their ebooks to market (retail, agency, library).

It's an interesting entry-level role, a lot of hand-holding with publishers to get them up and running on the DAM and to understand the ins and outs of digital publishing, but I like it. I only have a couple months left on my contract, but I am not sure if I want to stay beyond that (if they offer that to me) or if I should move on to another position. Kobo, the big Canadian ebook reader, has its offices not too far from where I live, I'm sure I could get in there. We'll see.

How are you guys going to afford going to those schools especially when they're out of state?

I'm applying to two PhD programs, and if I get in they'll fully fund me. The other three are MA programs and I have a good shot at assistantships, especially since I'll have had college-level teaching experience for a year.

Finished my Masters in finance last July. I've been chilling for a handful of months now. Getting employed soon in a bank, and will be going into the hell of academics again. Will be taking CFA courses, as well as a couple of online classes with Stanford uni.

I finally had my orientation today and registered for classes. I'm taking five this semester, would have been six but apparently you have to take a placement test for chemistry that I wasn't aware of (?!). I met with one of the Motorsports Engineering professors and we bullshitted for at least two hours about cars. I showed him a bunch of pictures of my car and he had a genuine look of amazement when I showed him what my brother and I did to it and specifically said, "Richard, I think you're going to do quite well in this field." Omega ego boost honestly.

Here's to becoming a full-time student.

You should hop into my political and economic history thread and school the fuck out of everyone :)
