  1. Opeth - "Deliverance" (driving home from the riverside park on a summer night)

  3. Sonic Mayhem - "Rage" (back home, driving to a park with my next door neighbor on summer break)
  4. Metallica - "Fight Fire with Fire" (riding in my dorm mate's Jeep on a fast food run)
  5. Ministry - "Deity" (getting high and writing poetry)

Was going to say you should replace it with DMDS! But ABitNS works as well.

Surprised you chose Riding Our Black Oceans over the debut. I’m a fan of it, but it never seems to get mentioned much. Everyone just talks about the debut when they’re brought up.

Going to include New Zealand with mine

I realize I'm not clear on the definition of "adventure game". As far as Nintendo-style action-fantasy games, mine is:
  1. Banjo-Kazooie
  2. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  3. Super Mario 64
  4. Kirby's Adventure
  5. Castlevania 64
For action-fantasy games on PC, it's:
  1. Thief: The Dark Project
  2. Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines
  3. Don't Starve
  4. Dishonored
  5. The Void
Haven't been a hardcore gamer in years, and never owned many consoles, so not many candidates for my list.

Still a killer list! Hard to single out Adventure genre since they coincide with other genres too.

when i hear ‘adventure games’ i think of point ‘n click stuff mostly, all that interactive story stuff. a lot of what you guys listed would be classed as platformers in my book.

cool to see the void get a namedrop!

i think the early fallout games would be classed more as action RPGs. i always found them a bit clunky to play but better written than the later games.

i'm not super experienced with point 'n click stuff. i was introduced to the genre through stuff like broken sword and the discworld games in the '90s, had some fun with those. i love certain levels of sanitarium, in which you progress through levels of your character's own psyche, but it's kind of inconsistent. i love the last express, that's probably my favourite, although that's not exactly a classical point 'n click as it's in the first person and occurs in real time. i also love a lot of the telltale stuff, more recently. the walking dead games are way better than the show IMO. edit: oh, and since the void was mentioned, pathologic is incredible and does have some adventure elements although it tends to be classed as a survival game or psychological horror or w/e.

gog.com is definitely the place to find a lot of the classics of this genre cheap if you're interested in exploring further. i bought the grim fandango remaster from there not long ago, i should get around to playing that.

as for my favourite platformers, these come to mind:
super metroid
metroid: zero mission
prince of persia
bruce lee
SM64
heart of darkness
oddworld: abe's exoddus
rayman
(i keep meaning to try some of the new ones which look great)
tomba/tombi
klonoa: door to phantomile
cosmo's cosmic adventure
commander keen 2
crystal caves

as you can see i'm more into the 2D stuff, although i do have fond memories of playing some 3D playformers (just the demos in some cases) like spyro, ratchet & clank, jak and daxter, ape escape, gex 3D, croc, etcccc

Did you never play the 3D Metroid games? Metroid Prime is amazing.

Also, I much prefer Banjo Kazooie and even Donkey Kong 64 to Super Mario 64. But I don't expect many people to feel the same about that.

2. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Interesting choice. This one is generally considered to be one of the weaker Zelda games by gaming communities. I disagree with that as I think it's really good. I haven't played it in years, but I think I remember the first half being really strong, but then it started to lose momentum. Majora's Mask is the Zelda game of choice these days from what I've seen. There was a sudden shift from Ocarina of Time to Majora's Mask. Personally never understood it myself. It's the quirkiest of the Zelda games, so I can see the appeal, but it's not my favourite.

I'm inclined to agree about DK64, though keep in mind I was a Donkey Kong fanatic back when those games were new. I honestly remember if I ever actually finished Mario 64. I remember it took me a while to get a handle on a lot of the controls for 64 games, Mario being one of them. Those camera angles and graphics would trip you out.
