Thoughts on older mainstream hard rock/metal bands

My wife likes Erknot et al and I won't even buy those CDs as presents for her, let alone for myself. I feel like indulging her liking for those bands would be like feeding her 20 doughnuts a day and not even commenting on the size of her arse.

Might seem cruel at the time, but it's better for her in the long run...:)

lol when i read "older mainstream hard rock/metal bands" i thought you were going to talk about bands like W.A.S.P. and Maiden.

shows the age gap.

Hell yeah, I thought we were talking about the 80's or something. Not 5 years ago....that's still pretty fresh to me.

I feel quite happy with myself that i never had to be introduced to heavy music via this numetal crap.

I totally agree. Not to blow my own horn, but by the time nu-metal came out, I'd been listening to metal for around 10-12 yrs.

I'd say because of this, and also what I grew up with, I never considered nu-metal to be metal at all and I still don't.

IMO nu-metal is a fucking insult to music in general. A fucking shitpile designed purely for fast cash and the same goes for these pseudo metal "hardcore" bands now. Fuck them all.

If I had it my way as a teacher, I'd be hammering kids with AC/DC, The Angels, Sabbath, Rush and Motorhead before diving into Maiden and Dio as their first year of Hard Music studies :D

Yeah I can see where you are coming from. I wouldn't say the whole genre is a complete waste of time, there are a couple of bands I can tollerate. For example SOAD have a few catchy tunes (amongst a pile of crappy ones, Chic' N' Stu' I mean come on that sucks). However, for the larger part, the nu-metal genre just really doesn't do anything for me. The music seems bland and dumbed down IMO.

I'm really glad I didn't have to wade through nu-metal as my first experience of harder music. I grew up listening to bands like metallica, megadeth, maiden etc, and while now I know there is better bands, these bands were stepping stones for me at least. They taught me about melody and longer more complicated composition for example on Master of Puppets, I found to be really interesting. However, I feel lucky that I didn't start listening to harder style music with bands like Korn or Disturbed. I just wouldn't of understood bands like Opeth and wouldn't of appreciated the complexity of the songwriting or the beauty of it. I would of ended up just like my friends who loved Korn and Ramnstein and thought they were the pinicle of metal. Now they like Atreyu, Parkway Drive and Trivium.

first of all, i would like to commend those of you who were gutsy enough to admit to actually like nu metal at one point, or even those who still do.

secondly, i would like to let you know you have horrid taste.

gutsy? haha you make it sound like a crime.

it's just another genre of music with bass, guitars, drums, chords, riffs, solos, vocal melodies, lyrics etc. the problem with it is that there's too much bullshit out there and only a few bands that can carry the torch.

NO BIG DEAL

Mudvayne's "LD 50" is cool, the rhythm section actually knows how to play their instruments (the bass player has one of the best tones ever), and their music is a lot more complex than the rest of those mooks (system of a down included), there were some weird time sig changes and fancy playing on songs like "Severed." Their newer albums are crappier though.

I also don't mind Slipknot. They're idiot metal to be sure, but once again, it's nice to hear some guys that SORT OF know how to play their instruments on the radio instead of linkin park and nickelback.

I used to be a big fan of Korn, and I still think they weren't half bad. They spawned a legion of horrible shit, and to be sure plenty of their stuff is terrible, but they were actually pretty damn original and had some cool sounding stuff. Their riffing style really is distinctive and interesting, especially on the first couple of albums.

Hmm...other mainstream hardrock bands of the last 10-15 years that I like or liked...Rage Against the Machine was fun, especially to play on bass back when I was just starting to learn. Alice in Chains was awesome, though they don't really fit in with the other stuff mentioned in this thread so NVM. The Deftones are also pretty good, though I hated their self-titled. Their new one is actually pretty good based on the two songs I've heard from it. Sevendust is also pretty decent although their last few albums have sounded basically identical. System of a Down has two albums that aren't bad (the S/T and Hypnotize). That's about all I can think of right now.
