They fall under the same category as Thyrfing if you ask me (I've only got Valdr Galga to judge from).

Hin Onde has never even seen viking metal, and never to be compared to them who really know what they are doing when we're talking about viking metal.. Hin Onde is pagan metal, but never _viking_..

Månegarm are viking metal? really? ...i thought they were just folk, no metal... maybe i should check them out again..

i think it was "havets vargar" that i heard, and that one was high speed black metal with some folk elements; didn't like it :<

Both fall under the category 'happycrap' if you ask me.
Do you count Enslaved's early works and Bathory's viking days as viking metal? There we have viking metal that is GOOD.

Of course I count Enslaved as viking metal, and it's one of the first real _viking metal bands_ there ever been.. One of the best bands from Norway ever..

Bathory is not a viking metal _band_, although has done albums with viking themes.. IMO Bathory is tired and boring crap with its wannabe-epic, lazy feeling.. The three first albums vere good black&thrash, the rest is total shit, if you ask me..

And about Thyrfing.. "Happy crap"..? Yeah right.. If your attitude is that what it comes to understanding _viking metal_, better to be quiet or change the damn hobby..

No offense but Bathory created Viking metal so Bathory can't be a wannabe.

I consider Enslaved been the one who really made the form of viking metal that we know nowadays.. They were the first real _viking metal band_ because of theme, image, language, attitude, feeling, everything, it is NORDISK.. But Bathory had only a couple of themes here and there, made songs in English *argh*, and about the music; IMO there is nothing what it comes to real nordic feeling or attitude.. I spit on that..

And if we talk about viking themes in the old days, remember Led Zeppelin's "The Immigrant Song" and themes used even by Manowar.. So Bathory isn't the first at all with this issue.. Most of the bands that have been inspired by Bathorys so called "viking metal"-era, are just crappy B-clones *spit*..

I'm extremely strict with this issue.. Enough said..

IMO Bathory created the viking style with albums like Blood Fire Death, HammerHeart, Twilight + the 2 last ones Nordland.
But what is viking metal for u ? Some black metal stuff with lyrics that speak about ancient times (nostalgia in fact), or heavy metal stuff with quite the same subjects, but speaking more about viking life & battles (i think it s what u called happycrap) ?
stuff)?

For me i dont really care about that kind of discution like "who is the TRUE one ?, Who is superior against the others ? who's is the best ? and so on, etc, more a child attitude... to arrive sometimes to questions like which is the best human race, more a fasciste attitude...

Frostheim, are you as stupid as this thread makes you look?
By the way, viking metal is not my "hobby".

And what is your problem..? Is it difficult to understand that people think different..? I can see that I've been into many kinds of pagan metal a bit longer than you, so keep it down..

Btw, as a folk musician myself, pagan themes and music are more than just a "hobby" of some sort for me..

Ok if you don't like Bathory then fine.
But Bathory is the father of Viking metal and you better accept that.

I've said enough above and now I'm out of this conversation..

About Bathory and Viking Metal: I did a phone interview with him some months ago and also talked about it with him.... Quorthon himself calls his albums only "NORDIC" stuff... he never calls it "viking" or sth.; he didn`t even like it to HEAR the word "Viking" and always corrected it into "nordic" , concerning his albums.

About the words from Thyrfing in the CD booklet, concerning Vintersorg: as it also sounded a bit rude to me (like something didn`t work out between them), so I just asked Thomas Väänänen about it (around a year ago, I guess).... and he said, it was all very very fine, good mood, good ideas, a good time (nothing wrong with anything concerning the music or the friendship), just some production or technical problems or differences, who fucked it up for the moment...

I know Quorthon calls his music Nordic metal, but Bathory still was the originators of Viking Metal. Quorthon makes (made) great fucking music but it is not always backed up by huge amounts of brain cells, and certainly not by much ideology. He does it for the fans. I don't think he wants to be associated with "viking rock" and such, and maybe not with viking metal either.
