I'm curious about you guys point of view on that matter. As far as I'm concerned, I think the metal tag is an easy convenience to label noisy/distorted music, that's all.

Discuss.

i think metal typically harbors an attitude, a determination and aura which you can distinguish from any other genre of music, even rock. its not something you could probably pinpoint exactly either, nor is it really my place to say or decide. nobody who is going to post in this thread will really be qualified to make such a judgement, for speculation will be the most practical and closest attempt at such a defenition. these days the lines are blurred anyway, it almost seems like a band doesnt have to be a metal band, to play metal music...so what could have been a concrete definition in the 80s, may mean absolutely nothing in 2006.

Very well said. I tend to agree with you. Can you tell a bit more about that attitude, determination and aura? Those are some pretty vague terms, what's the metal attitude, determination aura?

But then again, it's definitely not every "metal" band that share that aura...take for exemples bands like Summoning, Evoken, Pain of Salvation moves me in a very different way than Judas Priest does. On the other hand, I think that labeling those bands as metal is somehow a mistake.

sure, those bands move you in different ways. but it is to ultimately achieve the same thing.

Yes, there's nothing more to say. Some things just can't be put into words I guess.

Well... I know it sounds basic, and possibly stupid, but... I can't really recognise anything as metal until I hear some kind of guitar distortion. To me, that's the one thing that music has to have before it can be metal. Without it... it can be amazing music, and it can be many genres, but it won't ever sound like metal to me.

*Edit* Of course, just because there are distorted guitars doesn't necessarily render something 'metal'. Far from it. Hmm... I need to think about some sort of definition.

I agree, distortion is definitely a key element to metal.

To me, what defines metal:

Even though there are various "styles" of metal, whether it be death metal right down to metal ballads, I'll try to define metal as a whole.

1. NineFeetUnderground used the word attitude, and I agree. Attitude itself can't be defined nor readily determined, but it's there. It's probably why I love metal music, becuase it digs in deeper to me than any other kind of music.
2. Instrumentally, heavy use of guitars, a well dfined bass line, and pounding/sonic drums are metal to me.
2a. Other have stated guitar distortion is important, but I don't concur (unless I'm not defining distorted guitar properly).
3. Vocally I think any vocal style can fit into metal, for I feel it's #2 (instruments) that define and distinguish metal.

It would be easier to define various styles of metal seperately, but to just define metal is difficult.

Seriously, I can't think of one single metal band that doesn't use distortion.
