i thought about descend into the absurd too. the first track is the single most DEATH METAL tune ever recorded from where i'm standing.

Miasma - Schizophrenia or Death - Pull the Plug would be other contenders.

'schizophrenia' is excellent and probably miasma's best song, though i'm not sure i'd put it on the same level as the fleshcrawl. also, that intro is godawful. 'pull the plug' is decent but doesn't stand out for me.

demigod 'slumber of sullen eyes' (the song, but yeah also the album) is another one for the conversation, although it's sort of extraordinary in the way it seems to both encapsulate death metal and go far beyond it. stuff like ATG, demilich, later gorguts etc strays quite far from archetypal death metal to my mind, but demigod give me the impression of staying relatively close but infusing it with this absurd amount of mysticism and grandeur.
