top 5 non-metal albums of all time

I like a lot of the bands Mort listed, but I disagree with a lot of his opinions about music.

That aside, I think every decade has their good and bad, and there isn't one I can think of that is better than the other.

Rilo Kiley perhaps not, but No Doubt are an iconic band of the 90s.

Fuck that. When I think "90s music" I think of actually good bands. No Doubt was a fucking brief intelude of crappy music. There are far more "iconic" bands from the 90s.

I would actually rather listen to Rilo Kiley than No Doubt, and I would argue that in their genre they're capable of being quite influential.

Also, being iconic and popular doesn't make you a good musician.

Very true; but I feel that "iconic" can also just mean music that has had a long lasting influence. Bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana were far more influential and impactful than No Doubt.

No, perhaps not, but it is still a joke to say that bands like Zeppelin, Cream, Pink Floyd, what have you are in some way superior to the bands of today simply because they're more 'complex' or 'melody minded.'

Effective simplicity is infinitely harder to pull off than complexity.

They're superior because they've had a longer lasting impact. They've withstood the test of time. No Doubt is already becoming the faded remnants of a stain that will be washed out with time.

And I quit. That list, for the most part, is alternative music. I didn't even get into solo artists and other genres.

edit: I don't know why I decided to create that list, but I grew up listening to a lot of these bands, nostalgia is fun.

That is blatantly unfair considering these bands have had 30/40 some years to 'stand the test of time' whereas No Doubt released Tragic Kingdom in what? 1995? Not even 15 years since it has come out. It isn't 'fading' away. No one has forgotten about it. My local radio station still plays songs like Spiderwebs, Just a Girl, and Ex-Girlfriend (Return of Saturn kind of sucked as a whole but this song man, what a fucking song) quite often. When it comes down to it, yes, Gwen Stefani has soiled her reputation of an energetic skanking frontwoman over the years, but when it comes down to it Tragic Kingdom IS an album which will come into the next decade being remembered by many as a great album of the 90s.

I haven't forgotten about it because I never even knew about it.

It's not unfair; it's just the hard, honest truth.

Is Tragic Kingdom really still talked about? Just because the generation who grew up during the time when Tragic Kingdom was popular remember it doesn't mean it isn't fading away (or hasn't actually faded away already).

I believe it's the first time I hear anything about this album for a good 10 years if not more.

Perhaps not talked about in the sense that Led Zep and Pink Floyd are (somehow) still talked about, but it won't become forgotten. Perhaps it is just that I have a few friends with whom I always end up talking about the album that skews my perception.

We have very similar non-metal tastes. The 90's are my favorite non-metal era by far, though I do enjoy some older bands like CCR and Tom Petty, who are two of my all time favorites, but overall the 90's brand of alternative is just better to me.

A bit late to this one apparently.

I been a moody motherfucka lately so I definetly been indulging in some non metal stuff. I would have to say.

1.The Cure-Pornography
2.Wumpscut-Wreath of Barbs
3.Opeth-Damnation
4.Akira Yamaoka-The Silent Hill 3 Soundtrack
5.Lycia-Cold

a message from someone who is very aware of the classics of the past couple of decades (and likes/loves a number of them):

mort divine has gay, shitty taste in music.

also half the '90s stuff that's clearly most likely to stand the test of time hasn't appeared in this thread. my bloody valentine for example are prob second only to radiohead on that score, not that i like them much.

I just can't get into bands like Radiohead or, (not that they are similar) emo bands (real or otherwise) because of the vocals. Sorry if that sounds too simplistic but the vocal styles popular with current rock mostly irritate me.

in almost all cases like this it's no different from people who haven't got into growls - in other words, it would stop being an obstacle soon enough if you made an effort.

A lot of those are gay, but AIC is amazing and I really like some of the old White Zombie stuff. La Sexorcisto is a good album imo. I guess I like the more metal-ish alternative stuff.

anyone who judges radiohead without hearing kid a can go fuck themselves, and anyone who dislikes kid a can doubly go fuck themselves. ok computer is boring and the bends is gay.

wow... aside from a few good bands on this list... this list reminds me again why i HATE 90's popular music.

In no particular order:

Faith No More - Angel Dust
Ozric Tentacles - Erpland
Rush - Hemispheres
Kaddisfly - Set Sail the Prairie
Porcupine Tree - Coma Divine

the difference between Zep, Floyd and No Doubt is that Zep and Floyd made some incredible and iconic, groundbreaking music. Does No Doubt have any songs that even come close to a song like Kashmir or Stairway to Heaven or Dazed and Confused or Echoes or Shine on You Crazy Diamond or Comfortably Numb?
Frankly No Doubt are again one of those bands of the 90's that left me dumbfounded as to why they acheived such notoreity... I found them obnoxious.

Phenomenal live album, can't say enough.

Theres no reason to argue this one because Zep and Floyd will forever be remembered. No Doubt are absolutely dreadful. You either have to be a faggot or a 12 year old girl to properly like them...or like striped toesocks.
