So this is the story. I just got home and I am a bit drunk but I thought about this on my way home.

I rarely go out but today I thought I should. Sadly it was just about what I expected. Im not a very social person so hat is a problem in itself but Im becoming more and more aware that I simply cannot talk to people in bars/clubs because I cant hear what they say.

I have come to believe that its not just about the volume. I have tried and did try again today to talk to people but I cant even make out half of what they are saying. I spoke to one girl who I kind of know and found myself saying "yeah" to what she said even though I didnt quite hear (and thus didnt understand) what she actually said. I tend to not hear as well as ave a hard time to focus on one sound. I just hear alot of stuff all at once.

And on top of this I cant really enjoy the music either. They played "paradise city". A song I know very well but I noticed that in this enviroment it distorted alot in my ears. So much that I amost couldnt enjoy the song itself. I usually have no problems at concerts though (allthough I do use ear plus).

Does anyone else have this kind of problem or know what its called? I am starting to think that its something that can actually be diagnosed. And its a shame, Im not the most social person out there and when Im out I cant hear people so even if I try I cant talk to them very good.

I generally dislike bars as well, because I don't enjoy having to yell just to have a conversation with someone who is sitting right next to me. Unfortunately, I doubt the bar gives a shit, because they'd rather you just shut up and bought more drinks. Unfortunately, they're not going to do anything about it until they drive enough people away to affect their own business and I doubt that this is likely to happen any time soon, especially considering that every other bar has the same damn problem. Consequently, most people wouldn't even leave one bar due to the atmosphere because it simply isn't possible to find a better one at another place. Regardless, it still amazes me that so many people revolve their week around counting down to getting drunk over the weekend, even despite the poor atmosphere that the bars actually provide.

EDIT: This actually makes me think, if you're so unsatisfied with your job, school, life in general that you spend your whole week in anticipation of drinking over the weekend, maybe it's not your environment that's the problem; it's just you.

Don't come to Cincinnati then. That's all anyone does here is drink

I find that either in loud clubs or in church when you don't know what to say, can't understand, or can't hear anything...just say "grilled cheese is great" with a smile on your face! This seems to work...nobody can tell the difference.

Honestly, being an "old school kinda guy" that still goes to bars only, but recently went to an actual dance-club in a local city with my wife and her younger sister...my sister in laws "hot younger crowd" so to speak. The music was soooooo loud you could feel your chest shaking and could not hold a conversation to save your life. The best thing, even if you don't like it, is to dance and drink more...two things that don't require much discussion. Less talking and more looking.:yow:

I work in a factory and I get this too. The noise from all over the place makes it hard for me to understand what people are saying. The noise isn't even that terribly loud, it's just everywhere.

Yeah, I know I experience this in other places as well (cant come p with a good example though). I think I might need to go see a doctor because I highly doubt that everyone exppeiences things like I do. If they did I dont think they would go out as much.

Its like all music is very istorted, kind of like when a speaker has broken down and makes all these distorting sounds. And when it comes to people talking I can hear their voices but not what they are saying. I have a hard time focusing on one voice, I just hear them all at the same time.

There are good places as well but in general I dont know of them and I rarely go out because Im 99% sure that it will be to loud and I will go home early because of it.

When I spent time in England a few years ago it was way different actually. But then again they have another bar/pub mentality. Alot more good places to be social at. Even the metal place Edwards (that burned down a few years ago) had a better volume in general.

Attention Deficit Disorder? If thats what you meant I dont think thats it. This has to do with hearing. Outside of places where the volume is high I have no problems with any charachteristics of an ADD patient.

Did you go to Harry B James? XD

No, Pub Anchor. Will gig at Harry B tomorrow tough ;)

Heh, ok. Guess Anchor fits that description too, just thought it was so 100% typical of HBJ. Too bad I don't live in Stockholm anymore, otherwise I could have made the effort and go and see you play. :)

Thats why I just hit on the chicks in the smoking area where there is less noise.

Smoking is banned in bars, pubs, restuarants and clubs in Sweden. When it was allowed they were everywhere anyway so we never had that. In the summertime one can sit outside and be comfortable but its just to damn cold being outside and sitting still for any long time in the winter.

I also really hate this. It seems like the shittier the bar is, the louder they turn up the music. What is the point of going somewhere if you can't talk to anyone. If I wanted to sit and get drunk in silence I could do that much cheaper on my own.

The Worlds End is great at this.

It's overpriced, disgusting, you can't hear anyone, the toilets are foul and they only really play shitty metal/rock.

It's awesome.
