I fucking like them & I can dig on their older stuff quite a bit. I also like Nymphetamine, but it's one of their only newer albums I really like.
I also love Therion's new album, which seems to get a bit of a bad rap.

I love Metallica's The Black Album and I don't give a flying fuck what other people think about it. Their later stuff became too rockish for me and lost the magic, but The Black Album is like a fucking pot brownie, it's so much fun. I don't respect it the way I respect most of the music I listen to, and it's not as good as Metallica's early albums, but it's probably one of the most fun albums I have.
On that same topic... I don't understand the common hate for And Justice For All. Is it because they made a music video for that album, is that why people hate it? Because it's the most "metal" album Metallica ever did... I mean, it's nowhere near as innovative, powerful, impressive or awesome as some of Metallica's earlier work, no doubt about it. But as far as the typical metal sounds, Justice has more of that kind of thing than Metallica's earlier albums. I guess I could understand fully why somebody would not like it because maybe it is derivative and not as amazing as their earlier work. But it seems to get lumped in with their later, non-metal albums, when it's as metal as any Metallica album ever was.
Also... I watched Headbanger's Ball last Saturday and enjoyed every single song they played. Some of them might be considered respectable bands but some of the bands were obviously screamo.

I would say that the Black album is their most popular release. Many early fans like it, and many newer fans like it. Yes it is disliked by the insignificant "true metal" crowd, but that's a small percentage.
I can speak to the Justice thing a little bit. Yes, it is among their heavier releases. When considering Metallica's metal years, I would definitely include it. But as a long time fan of Metallica before it came out, it just didn't do for me what the earlier stuff did. I have never submerssed myself in it or analyzed it much, but for whatever reason, I don't think it's that great. Part of it was the weird-ass production. It just sounds weird and kinda lame to some degree. I have felt this way since it came out. Back then there was no automatic hate toward Metallica.

1. Bullshit. The main accent isn't at him being yelling. Just because on the photo his hand/arm is covering his mouth. So you can't see him yelling, even if you know it.
