unpopular albums that you really like

Talking Pink Floyd are we? As if anyone doesn't like DSotM? Talk about an album people don't like -- The Final Cut! It's my single, #1 favorite album of all-time, and it's the most hated upon Floyd album.

Anyway I think you guys telling people not to listen to metal... that's not cool. This is a metal forum. I'm proud to listen to metal for it's metalness because metal is fucking awesome. Metalheads should not be criticized on their own forum. ;)

I have no hate for SOAD or Atreyu or whoever. But if it's not metal, it's not metal...

It's not how metal a metal band is that makes them good metal, it's how good they are at creating music.

I agree with this. Also, I listen to more non-metal than metal. But for me trying to listen to bands like SOAD can be very frusturating. I don't have any lack of respect for them, there are bands I love that I might not even be able to listen to if I had gotten into metal earlier in my life. Those semi-heavy bands are an irritant, like hearing a constant beeping noise, because I often love the ideas and melodies of the music but the overly-mild level of heaviness just makes it not able to satisfy me. This doesn't apply to bands that aren't trying to be heavy like that at all, but those kinds of popular bands who non-metal fans think are metal become irritating because if they would just be heavier then I would get a major kick out of them.

I couldn't agree more that people shouldn't be pissy at SOAD for not being metal enough, as I don't personally like it when anyone is pissy about any band. But it's no crime to not like a band.

I fucking despise heterosexuaity and manliness.

I think it's in poor taste to attack the idea of loving metal on a metal forum. I fully respect the idea that vihris-gari was expressing (and I also adore his taste in music!) but I think it's uncool how on message boards people are often made to feel like dumb-dumbs simply for liking the thing that the board itself is all about. It IS great to be metal and it IS great to like metal and metalness. ;)

Nobody was ever attacking the liking of metal. I was simply giving suggestions on appreciating SOAD. You say they irritate you because they are just close enough to metal to pique your interest, but are not metal enough to satisfy that desire? Well consider that they don't care what they "are". Consider that by filtering everything remotely heavy through "how metal" ears you may be missing a lot of good music. Yeah, that's ok. You can do what you like. I think we all have some filters like that, and lack patience for certain musical styles. The whole Opeth thing escapes me, and I just don't feel like pursuing it.

The whole "how metal is your metal" thing makes me think of Pantera. Yeah they are noisy and heavy, but they don't seem to have much more than that to offer. Also it reminds me of a lot of the hardcore scene from the 90's and early 2000's. Loud and heavy and screamy, but no depth of songwriting. Angry tough-guy lyrics, but shallow musical songwriting.

Chill, I wasn't accusing you of attacking metal. Liking metalness came under question and then you responded to my response to vihris.

No reason for you to attack my taste. Acknowledge the fact that taste is not a matter of choice, and I couldn't love SOAD no matter how hard I try. Fact is I *have* tried, and I already made it clear how I do respect them.

Well consider that they don't care what they "are".

And I don't care what their opinion of anything is, least of all themselves. That has no barring on whether I like their music.

Consider that by filtering everything remotely heavy through "how metal" ears you may be missing a lot of good music.

Don't say that as if I haven't tried, and certainly don't say that as if my liking heavy things is a choice. No reason to want to like every band, there's unlimited bands out there for all of us. Nothing wrong with me wishing bands would be heavier, you yourself like metal the most too.

Yeah, that's ok. You can do what you like. I think we all have some filters like that, and lack patience for certain musical styles. The whole Opeth thing escapes me, and I just don't feel like pursuing it.

Fair enough. I don't consider taste to be indicitive of a lack of patience, per se', but I agree with your general idea.

I think you have to start with deciding if the criticism was good or not, if it wasn't, THEN you can start pissing all over you territory, if it was good criticism, argue and stuff like that, don't just go like "Oh noes, this is the sanctuary, you aren't supposed to have bad emotions in here!".

 Well said.

Six Feet Under - Commandment

the song "Ghosts of The Undead" kicks all fucking kinds of ass!:kickass:

as a whole I like it but a few tracks really shine

Burning Witch-Crippled Lucifer
Forgotten Woods-The Curse of Mankind

Are those really considered unpopular? I love both of those albums!

Also, I have to say I still love TWWTG from Blut Aus Nord. That album received a lot of praise when it first came out but these days I rarely see anyone say they enjoy it.

I like a lot of stuff by Dream Theater & Symphony X. I like Stream of Passion a ton for some odd reason & a few folks seem to hate it.

With Ayreon I seem to like the albums that never get taled about, "Into the Electric Castle" & "The Final Experiment" & I hate the albums everyone loves "The Human Equation" & "Universal Migrator". I'm like that with a lot of bands. I hate the albums people love & like the albums they don't like.

OTHERS THAT I DON'T LIKE
Therion - Vovin
Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth
Kamelot - Epica; The Black Halo
Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism
Yngwie Malmsteen - Odyssey (this kinda/sorta qualifies)
Behemoth - Demigod (hate is a strong word; don't like is rather suitable)

Back to the question. These may not all be super hated, but more despised in the tr00 metal head community than anything. Yeah, my main premise here is going for albums that are hated in that community, as most of this stuff is rather popular.

Cradle of Filth (enough said)
Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefacation; Epitaph
Children of Bodom - Hatecrew Deathroll; Are You Dead Yet?
Emperor - Anthems at the Welkin Dusk
Megadeth - Cryptic Writings
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss (my favorite Slayer album)
Pantera - Metal Magic (weird fucking soft spot for this one)
Testament - The Ritual
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked (I sure don't love it, but I like it more than most of their stuff)
Metallica - ...And Justice For All (not widely HATED, but still hated by a lot of folks. I've had debates on this album with a ton of folks who just despise it & I have to stick it here because it's likely one of my favorite albums of all time)

Shit, I can't think of anymore good ones right now. All I'm thinking of is stuff I don't like that a lot of folks like. My tastes are shifty as fuck.

The Floyd is definitely cool, but I like Relics better though,it had that way-out psychedelic touch.

Umma Gumma is also way up there.
