I was wondering, considering the black metal direction proposed for Opeth's future by Mikael in that recent interview. I myself much prefer the deeper growls used since My Arms, Your Hearse.

I couldn't agree more, I don't find the vocals on Orchid/Morningrise bad in any way. It's just that after extensive listening I still find them much less accessable than the later period, which I also find to be a better expression of the aggressive and desperate sentiments, which are a large part of what I love so much about the newer Opeth songs.

Despite the fan I'm not the biggest fan of Opeth's latest releases, I will say that Akerfeldt's vocals have grown in leaps and bounds.

So obviously the later stuff.

None of the above.

100% "clean" vocals would serve Opeth best.

I love Mikael's death vox, but let's be honest, the guy's "clean" voice is just TOO good to be left out in the cold.

And what is Opeth's next step? This idea of 2 30 minute 'black metal' tracks is worrisome. Why regress? Why abandon the awesome progression of that began with "MAYH" and has culminated with the perfect "Damnation"? WHy not continue the progesssion?
Write heavy songs & drop the death vox.

(I know that most here would kill me for this opinion, but so be it) :)

Stop Extreme Vocals = Opeth is dead
The 'Black' vocals are more beautiful sometimes.I just love both :)

first, why do you guys always think progression=going softer?
second, can you imagine black metal with clean vocals all the way?
I think the vocals of the Orchid/Morningrise are would be great for black metal.

PS: Btw, dont worry yourself guys, if you are, nothing is decided. it is not 100% or maybe even 50%, that Opeth will do a black metal album next.

I'll praise you for that opinion because I also share it though I can't say that I "love" Mikael's death vocals. :flame:

Heres the thing, if Mikeal went back to the black vox, I garuntee you they would be vastly improved and far superior to those of the 1st two albums, simply cuz hes leard a lot about his voice sience then. Im looking forward to the potential 2 30 min BM songs. Im sure they would still contain clean vox throughout. Even Deliverance did, and it was suposed to be the "all heavy album". Indeed Mikeals clean vox are too good to ignore
