Well. First of all, Greetings from Caracas.
Allow me to say that everything I'm about to say is subjective, and that I myself have a very weird taste when it comes to music. That said, I may begin.
My favorite [BAND] (remark the word BAND, as there are 2 things I'm going to outline here) is Seventh Wonder. Without thinking about it twice, I can say that they are just amazing. Although not my favorite, their first album is quite good, and that says a lot about a band. Waiting in the Wings was the first album I heard coming from them, being their first song I heard "The Edge of My Blade". Mercy Falls... pretty much speaks for itself, as it has a very good reputation; I'm sure that many of you may have already heard it, and it is just awesome. Finally: The Great Escape. Both the individual song, and the album are just masterpieces, being The Great Escape (song) My favorite overall song. The orchestral parts, and the melodies and themes on every songs are beautiful. Also, some excellent vocals, not excluding the quality of other instruments, are present on every song (The bass lines are awesome, guitars are powerful and filled with style, keyboards are beautiful; the keyboard solos are awesome, and maybe the most complex drums I've ever heard) and this is the main reason why Seventh Wonder is my favorite [BAND]
Other good bands that I like a lot are:
-Dream Theater. Progressive Metal, the quality and complexity of their music is remarkable, but might not be what they used to be anymore, since Portnoy left. (might be better, might not.) Excellent riffs, and both guitar and keyboard are just awesome. (still think that SW is better.)
-Slayer. They're kind of deathy-like thrash metal, but their riffs are awesome. Some of you probably won't like them, though.
-Pink Floyd. Psychodelic, Their music is probably the genesis of all the modern rock. Just beautiful and filled with style.
-Symphony X. They're quite crazy, and that's the main reason I like their music.
Some Bands I don't like as much, but still pretty good:
-Avenged Sevefold
-Dio
-Yes
-Stratovarius
Moving on. My Favorite [MUSICIAN] is, by far, Allan Holdsworth. Boy, that's a man who knows his guitar. Although he's pretty much... unknown, he's a living legend. His songs (and he has a lot) are mainly improvised, with a *clearly* unique playing style. His genre is Jazz, mainly fusion, deriving his style from John Coltrane, one of the forefathers of Bebop and modern Jazz (Fun Fact: Allan plays the Guitar, but he made his style based on John Coltrane, who played the SAXOPHONE. Amazing, Isn't it?). Allan's style could break almost any guitarist's spirit (myself included) as his songs cannot (or very difficultly) be played by any other living (or dead) guitar player on earth. Once, Yngwie Malsteem (or whatever his name is) tried to play one of Allan's songs, and, knowing that he could not, just gave up. He influenced many of the modern guitarist, being the legendary John Petrucci on the list. His insanely fast and (pretty much) perfect style make Allan Holdsworth my favorite [MUSICIAN]
Other musicians I like:
-John Petrucci. Flawless, and... well, I can't describe him. just too awesome. second favorite
-Steve Vai. His music is a little weird, but... he's a very good guitar player.
-John Coltrane. A legend. enough said.
Well... Hope that was useful. See you around!
