what is at the forefront of extreme metal now?

Or, alternatively, you could grow some balls and engage the criticism in an honest way instead of writing off any attempt at criticism because it annoys you or hurts your little feelings.

.

This thread is a valid way to discuss the future of metal, and where it is heading. "The State Of Metal" needs to be talked about.

You guys still listen to metal? I've already moved on to the next big thing, a cappella.

I just wanted to point out this isnt "a whining about the state of metal thread" It's not its intention. I'm simply asking where and who is innovating within this genre?

I think metalocalypse is great. Lots of in jokes, I just find that if the media is willing to imbrace what was once the extremitys of metal there must be sumthing pushing further.

Name me some bands!movements, subgenres I should be checking out

Maybe this should be in the band recommendations forum, if that's what you're looking for.

Make a thread saying what kind of stuff you're looking for. I'm into lots of extreme symphonic music:

Bishop of Hexen
Tvangeste
Hollenthon
Obsidian Gate
Moonsorrow
Ancient Rites

It's not criticism; it's whining.

What whining? Where is this whining you speak of? All I saw were examples of how underground metal is being mainstreamed and appropriated. How is this any worse than somebody giving their opinion on a band or other things of that nature? (something which happens here all the fucking time.)

My comment wasn't really in response to the THREAD CREATOR so much as this idea that metal is becoming weaker, safer and no one is doing anything interesting anymore, which is no doubt something SOMEONE would bring up eventually.

Fuck you.

Yeah, I apologize for the dumb post.

Anyway, I think the "safety" of metal is secondary to the quality of the music, which is high as it has always been, esp. if one looks hard enough for good music coming out. The tameness has never been a concern to me.

I just want a new, interesting a genre to come out. I feel like metal might just keep regurgitating the same style out over and over again. Of course there will be a few gems that come out of the regurgitation but ho much will be trash. I would like to see metal grow into something different and not be as shallow as what post-metal is. I can thank a few of the people here for showing me how pointless that genre has become.

I like how you phrase it, like it's a movie or something.

IMO "genre" doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot- it's a matter of a band's immediate influences. Most of the experimentation in the scene these days is a matter of strapping various sounds and styles together (every other band's myspace goes on about how they "transcend genres"); what we need are more bands that combine interesting influences with original thought. That'd be nice.

exactly.
A new genre is rarely(if ever?) born out of nowhere, its the gradual evolution of things that get to that point.
