Right behind you...
What is the most beautiful, spine-tingling music you have ever heard?

I've seen threads dedicating to those "spine-tingling" moments in Opeth, but never for all music.

Post your opinions on some of the most beautiful, tear-jerking, spine-tingling, etc moments in music, metal or not.

When it comes to metal, a lot of Opeth, especially Dirge For November and scattered parts of Moonsorrow's works really send chills down my spine.

But, as a sucker for Eastern music, I'm gonna say that the longest spine chill session I ever had was a couple of months ago at my church's Holy Friday service. It was the 40 minute Lamentations service (no, not the Opeth DVD :p) Hopefully, us open-minded metalheads can appreciate it. (this isn't metal-archives is it...:rolleyes:) Anyway, the sound of the choirs and congregation singing at once sent chills down my spine for most of the 40 minutes. I've never had chills down my spine for that long. Even with those epic riffs and melodies, it usually fades away. But for those 40 minutes, that feeling remained. Of course, theres no video of that, but I'll post some links to give you an idea of the Eastern Church epicness. A lot of Eastern Orthodox chanting music is really beautiful and quite epic too, imo. Something about that underlying "hum" is really amazing.

The second movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Minor fits the bill, it's easily the best instrumental piece I've ever heard. Barber's Adagio for Strings also does it, but it's become a cliche and isn't as good as the aforementioned Ravel to begin with.

As for rock, some genre bands make a career out of this kind of thing...Blackfield II has several songs like that, Novembers Doom did until they went all EVUL on their last two albums, Opeth definitely has their moments of spine-tingling on all their albums besides Deliverance and Watershed, Novembre also. I'm most affected by Tori Amos though cause I'm a fag. Baker Baker, Mother, Carbon, Golddust, Bouncing off Clouds, Virginia, Tear in your Hand, etc. That wall of sound enveloping vocal thing she has going on some of her albums is :zombie: (that means mindblowing).

Oh yeah, Pain of Salvation's Remedy Lane/ TPE1 have the most spinetingling moments of any rock albums I've ever heard. The bridge on King of Loss especially stands out in my mind, but those albums are almost one long sustained orgasm.

to wankerness, I've always wondered, what the hell is going on in your sig.? :p

Just to see if I'm not alone, what does everyone else think of those Orthodox chants?

More Chills For Me
-Crimson II: 4:30-5:30, 12:00-13:00, alright pretty much every mellow part of the song
-Most, if not all, of V:Havitetty by Moonsorrow
-The outro to Nightingale's Eternal, wow that's beautiful, I want that played at my funeral :p
-Opeth's Karma ("you have nothing more to find"...)
-The latter part of the solo in Dream Theater's "Blind Faith"
-Most of Ashes Against The Grain by Agalloch, "the god of man is a failure" in Bloodbirds and, if your in the right conditions (night, rain, darkness) Part 3 of Our Fortress Is Burning is scary as hell (like a radio transmission from a nuclear holocaust)
-And one of my favorites, the entrance of the accordion melody into Moonsorrow's "Pimea" at 7:00

I can understand why you like it. But I can't listen to it longer than a few minutes. Maybe, if I was in different mood I could really enjoy it. Or in the right setting.

Other chills for me: Björks "Hyperballad" gives me the chills when the techno beat kicks in. Then there's "Cold as Stone", a song by a-ha, from their album "Memorial Beach", a great melancholic song. Of course, "Rylynn" by Andy McKee, dedicated to a little girl who died at the age of two. More great stuff: "Astounded" by BranVan3000, "Nichts Muss" by Barbara Morgenstern, "Rollin' Over" by Brian May. Play this last song on 10 if you want to get the dust out of your boxes.

And then, back in the day, when Apocalyptica's debut album came out ... I was heavily into Metallica at the time. And then "Apocalyptica ... plays Metallica by four cellos" came out ... it was so great, i liked it so much I was close to tears.

I'll list full albums, otherwise the list would be too long:

* The Fountain OST
* Anything by Agalloch
* Anything by Mono
* Anything By Explosions In The Sky
* () and Takk... by Sigur Ros
* El Nora Alila by Orphaned Land
* Temporary Psychotic State by Subterranean Masquerade

That's it for now. Maybe later I'll post more.

Many a song by Opeth.

Sleep by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I was out shopping with this playing on my mp3 player and the ending was just so overwhelming that I was on the verge of tears. I know that makes sound pretty gay, but put on some decent headphones and turn them up pretty loud. The ending (Broken Windows, Locks Of Love Part III) just seems like a massive wave of bliss.

The entire Kind Of Blue album by Miles Davis. Once I've set this one going there is no chance in hell I'll stop listening til I get to the end of the album.

Kind of Blue is definitely great. But my favourite Miles Davis recordings are Eighty-One, Nefertiti and Summertime.

Willie Nelson - Stardust (the song)
Beatles - Hey Jude
Cat Power - The Color And The Kids (such a sad song)
Explosions in the Sky - Memorial (especially that crushing finale!)
Beatles - Golden Slumber (don't know why but I almost cry every time I hear it)
Bach - Air on the G String
Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (as well as most of Grace)
PJ Harvey - Rub Til It Bleeds
PJ Harvey - Legs
