Most Overrated Bands

>Saying Metallica is overrated? Well, no

Well, yes. Metallica was a decent NWOBHM band on their first release, but they were nothing original. After Mustaine left, they just got boring. The only people who thought that Metallica was new or original were kids who hadn’t heard much real metal. It sounded angrier than Bon Jovi or the Eurythmics, so there were a lot of kids who thought it was cool. Anybody who really knew music knew that Metallica was a poser (poseur) band from early on. I laughed at them then, and I laugh at them now. Crappy musicians, boring songs, bad personalities, and a lot of hype and marketing. That’s Metallica.

>if you mean they sold out.

They started out “sold out.” They’ve always been about marketing and hype, and never about the music. 100% image. 0% content.

>They made metal what it is today, period!

I’m sorry, I’m not usually this blunt, but that has to be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard. Fortunately, metal is what it is today in spite of the mediocrity of bands like Metallica. Though, if you’re talking about the whole empty-headed nu-metal scene, or other unwashed, uneducated, pathetic non-musician bands out there, then you are probably right. Metallica created a metal scene that just about ruined metal. They made metal pathetic and weak, and strengthened an image of metal as being for people who were stupid and dirty.

Fortunately, there are enough people out there who do things like, oh, learn how to play their instruments, that there will be great metal bands in spite of Metallica.

I've always loved chris cornells voice, just thought i'd throw that in for good measure.

i also love opeth and think they are one of the best bands out there, but yeah i would pretty much agree that to the point they get praised among devout opethians, that there is an element of 'overratedness'.

the beatles.. frankly i myself cant stand most of the music, find it incredibly boring.. BUT.. for the time they came out, they really did revolutionise the pop scene (considering the stuff that was being played on the radios before them).. and people who were teens in the 60's, to this day still love them for that. so although myself i am not into it, i can respect what people see in them.

I read about four posts and stopped reading. If you think about it, every fucking band is going to be overrated, in someone's opinion. For example, I think a lot of bands, like Sinergy for instance, is overrated, when one person thinks Opeth is overrated. People have their own tastes/opinions. I sometimes would like to kill people for saying that Dream Theater is overrated, but I can't....you know why? Because it's their own fucking opinion. Everyone can agree with me, Britney Spears is a overrated bitch and she has no goddamn talent whatsoever. What about the (pathetic) people that listen to her music? Do they have the same views as us? No. They might not have the same view and knowledge as us (or at least most of us) do, but they listen to what makes them move, what sounds right to them. They talk shit about the music we listen to and vice versa, although it's completely pointless. You can't compare something like that against a band/group someone else likes. The thing that I hate, though, is the fact that all of these cocksucking faggots who don't know shit about talent/music can sit there and talk shit about bands who they don't like, yet have more talent as far as technicalities/songwriting goes. I hate "Nu-metal", I talk shit in the sense about how I hate it, but I don't talk shit about the music written. Like I said earlier, people have their own tastes and I don't like it when people talk shit about bands that I like/love, so I feel I shouldn't about another's. I respect the fact that they are writting and making music, but I can still hate the music and the people that write it.

This caught my attention. As long as I know bands like Motorhead, Diamond Head were part of the NWOBHM movement. Metallica on the other hand are from the states, so they wouldn't be part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal movement. Could you elaborate a little bit more?

Sorry. I meant that their style was typical NWOBHM, not that the members themselves were British. I wish they were, though, so we wouldn't have to admit that they're from the US...

It sure does, although I can tolerate some of the more mainstream, symphonic black metal like Emperor or whatnot. I also like Viking metal a lot, but bands like Darkthrone, Mayhem, and especially Burzum, blow.
