hello everone. danny from anathema here. i've been reading with interest your messages about favourite albums, the quality of alternative 4 and the speculation on the future of anathema. so i thought i'd tell you what i think.
as for past anathema albums, i think eternity is the first one where songwriting came to the fore, and certainly songs like etenity parts 2&3, suicide veil and far away showed duncan as a real emerging talent for writing songs. to be honest i think this album suffered a bit in the production, unneccesary down tuned guitars and vincents voice which at times sounded a little bit inexperienced. nevertheless for songs this remains a very good album by our standards.
the silent enigma was a very special album because of the way it came together, the team work involved and the help we received from vincent o'connell and deryk fullwood for writing great words when we needed them. its darker and heavier but there are some really good moments on it, especially the last three tracks.
alternative 4 is a great album, because the songs are special and nothing was over-done.(unlike eternity) it was a bad time for the band though, and a very dark period in our personal lives, as you can hear. vinnys voice was well recorded and well sung, and he gained in confidence during that time, although me and duncan both feel that he sounds more like himself on parts of eternity and A.F.D.T.E.
judgement is not our favourite album, but one last goodbye could be the most moving of our songs, and there are some good moments on it (the build up in judgement for example) and it was here that john douglas got his chance to write songs too. i was taken aback by the quality of his stuff.
a fine day is the sound of a band trying to keep it together in turmoil, and thanks alot to les and john and vinny, we succeeded. i think it far superior to judgment, in all aspects. it is only with this album that i feel (personally) on a par with duncan as a songwriter, but that is probably lack of confidence or something.
each has there own opinion, but for my part my favourite anathema album is...
THE NEXT ONE!
