hello everone. danny from anathema here. i've been reading with interest your messages about favourite albums, the quality of alternative 4 and the speculation on the future of anathema. so i thought i'd tell you what i think.
as for past anathema albums, i think eternity is the first one where songwriting came to the fore, and certainly songs like etenity parts 2&3, suicide veil and far away showed duncan as a real emerging talent for writing songs. to be honest i think this album suffered a bit in the production, unneccesary down tuned guitars and vincents voice which at times sounded a little bit inexperienced. nevertheless for songs this remains a very good album by our standards.
the silent enigma was a very special album because of the way it came together, the team work involved and the help we received from vincent o'connell and deryk fullwood for writing great words when we needed them. its darker and heavier but there are some really good moments on it, especially the last three tracks.
alternative 4 is a great album, because the songs are special and nothing was over-done.(unlike eternity) it was a bad time for the band though, and a very dark period in our personal lives, as you can hear. vinnys voice was well recorded and well sung, and he gained in confidence during that time, although me and duncan both feel that he sounds more like himself on parts of eternity and A.F.D.T.E.
judgement is not our favourite album, but one last goodbye could be the most moving of our songs, and there are some good moments on it (the build up in judgement for example) and it was here that john douglas got his chance to write songs too. i was taken aback by the quality of his stuff.
a fine day is the sound of a band trying to keep it together in turmoil, and thanks alot to les and john and vinny, we succeeded. i think it far superior to judgment, in all aspects. it is only with this album that i feel (personally) on a par with duncan as a songwriter, but that is probably lack of confidence or something.
each has there own opinion, but for my part my favourite anathema album is...

THE NEXT ONE!

sorry, but we haven't heard it yet... :)
anyway, i think A4 and The Silent Enigma are the best albums you've ever recorded , mainly because of their great atmosphere... they are really very special. but i do like all anathema albums very very much (including either Judgement and The Crestfallen EP, etc.) i was never disappointed with anathema recordings.. hope i'll never will!!!!

Judgement and Eternity are my favourites.
Keep on feedbacking with the guitar like on Eternity. ;) It rocks.
And.... why should we believe you that you are really Danny from Anathema? You have to prove it somehow, I think. :)

Can you drop us some hints regarding your vision of the possible/desired direction of the Next One? How do you see your guitar style develop in the future? Will your playing become even more daring, more intricate than on "A Fine Day to Exit?" Will we see more songs like "Barriers" or "Temporary Peace" or the coda to "Pressure", with all the exquisite guitar soundscapes?

That's one of the things I love about that album, the vocals sound kinda raw and natural, vulnerable and full of emotion. Like Jonas from Katatonia and Aaron from MDB when they started singing instead of growling- kinda like their soul has been stripped bare for the world to see. That sort of thing hits me more than someone who is note and tone perfect. I like records with 'mistakes' in them (who was the person that decided Death Metal bands should spend 2 months in the studio? That's just wrong, IMHO :D )

one last goodbye could be the most moving of our songs,
Yeah, I have to skip that song most of the time, it just gets to me too much.....

I agree, it is a lack of confidence, absolutely  :D

I can really only listen to AFDTE every now and again, and at certain times of the night due to the pretty heavy impact it has on me.

Like I pointed out in my rather overenthusiastic 'Alternative 4' thread, I think this is my second favourite after the new one. Vincent's voice is probably what does it, although I love the music on A4.

As for 'A Fine Day..' wow... I get the sense that you guys aren't really all that keen on it. I fucking love it, though. It's a whole new level. And yeah, John is a great songwriter, but I'll be damned before I admit that there's been a better song written than 'Temporary Peace'. That song is a masterpiece. It reminds me of my girlfriend....

Anyway, where was I?

'The Silent Enigma' is incredible, 'Eternity' is wonderful, although I agree on the production comments (Angelica still being one of the all time great songs), 'Alt 4' is obvious, 'Judgement' is lush and beautiful, and the new one is the best... In fact, I'd rate it the second greatest album I've heard after 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down', by Katatonia.

As for songwriting, Danny, don't worry about it. You've eclipsed Duncan through Temporary Peace and Inner Silence.

Later,

Ben.

THe vocals on D.O. gets on my tits! I don't like weak or unsure vox the majority of the time.. I can't say why tho ;) Also at times I don't like the vocals on Eternity, but I agree in general the rawness rocks!

AFDTE is amazing... I recently discovered how good it is to doze to ;) I can never sleep to music, but I can quite easily lay back and relax listening to AFDTE.. And Requiem I agree about temporary peace what an excellent closing track...

Alternative four is still my favourite tho :)

Personally I think the new album lacks real songs, they are just collages of sound, an acoustic part starts, but the song never gets under way, there's no beginning, no end. There's no structure. The album definitely has its moments and enjoy listening to it, but A4 (best) and Eternity (second best) is the shit if you ask me. Judgement has good songs, but less good ones too.

I think "Silent Enigma" is the least good album (but still good!) and I'd rather hear you play "Sleepless" than "A Dying Wish" live, or if it has to from "Silent Enigma" let it be "Restless Oblivion".

"Sleepless" was definitely a hint of things to come in the future back then, without the raw vocals it could just as well have been on Eternity or A4.

danny, anything you touch is divine for me. i dont like darren's death vox, so im not a big fan of those old albums, but i have to say im definitely in love with vinny's growls on the silent enigma. so there you have it, i love each one of your albums, including the new direction you ahve taken...you are very good at it. and yeah, i, too, wonder what the new direction will be on the next album, which'd better come soon...'CAUSE I CANT GET ENOUGH OF YOU, GODDAMIT!

I think all of anathema's albums are excellent. Each one progresses from the last, taking different ideas forwards, but still being unmistakenly anathema. It took me a while to get what AFDTD was about musically, but when i saw you at the academy2 in birmingham last year, i totally got it. Can't wait for the next album and tour. Keep up the good work!

Now I manage to sing along with AGDTE, the album has good songs… but they could be more developed… I don’t know. I honestly think you are trying to be Anathema but clinging too much to the mainstream song structure. Anyway I can really enjoy Barriers (man! That song is powerful without visible power ;)) and Temporary Peace. My thumbs up goes entirely to THE SILENT ENIGMA, I just can't get enough of Dying Wish, Restless Oblivion, The Silent Enigma, Shroud of Frost… along with Dance o December by Katatonia they always find a way in my cd player.

for me its gotta be "silent enigma",my fav album of all time, closely followed by "judgement" which has "that" most heart breaking of songs, its also the album my girlfriend plays to death and she wasn't a fan till she saw them live in manchester, needless to say she is now!!! did anyone notice how the songs on "afdte" sounded heavier live than on the album, totally brilliant in my opion and definitly my album of the year.on a side note,i adore the orchestral version of "silent enigma" on resonance1,which shows just how fuckin talanted these guys are, awsome stuff.keep safe peeps!!;)

Your opinion is very important. It is definitely original - 'view from the other side' :) But I, for example, consider every album uncomparable with others due to its extremely original nature. wow.

I wish I could agree with you, but in poor old Australia we just never get the chance to see our favourite bands live, which is obviously an ongoing problem.

Jesus Bane, it's bad enough living in Australia without you revving the live show up to heights I could only dream of!!!:)
