What's the longest song you've heard?

I don't think creating a very long song (and more precisely a song-album) is very different to composing more normal songs... After all most long song are like many sorter ones put together with certain themes being repeated throughout the song. And don't forget that long songs are not something new in rock scene. Remember all those 70's prog rock bands which always composed really long songs (i still remember Yes' "Tales From The Topographic Oceans", a double lp containing 4 songs)....

That's a great album. A friend of mine sent me an edited version of it that sounds excellent. I would like to see Yes sometime soon. I hope they tour near me. :p

The first "long ass" song I heard was Manowar's "Achilles, Agony and Ecstacy in 8 parts" (28 min). Then My Dying Bride's "The Cry of Mankind" (13 min). Then "Black Rose Immortal." THen Edge of Sanity's "Crimson" (40 min), and finally LoD, DoD.

All of them are well done.

Is there something about creating a really long song that makes artists put a lot of effort into, thereby causing it to kick ass?? It's worked for EOS, Green Carnation, and Opeth, taht's for sure....

Well, for me, the Manowar, EoS and Green Carnation all tell a story. But I think the main reason those songs kick ass is because they can properly develop all the musical lines (riffs, whatnot).

Some album that just had running water and rain for about 2 hours straight. I sat there amazed. I couldn't believe what a waste of my fucking time it was.

dammit Triste got it before i did. yes the doom metal band sleep has a one-song album called jerusalem and it's VERY boring...but i guess we might find many underground dooms bands that do a lot of long songs...it's just that it's very hard for a doom metal band to be doomy and not boring at the same...bands like cathedral, MDB, solitude aeturnus manage that perfectly...

Devil Doll - The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms. 66:06
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness, sth like 60 mins
At The Gates Edge of sanity - Crimson, about 40 minutes

60 min cd/tracks have got to be fucking tiring... i am amazed that they can be creative enough to hold someones interest for the whole fucking hour

MISTIGO VARGGOTH DARKESTRA- The Key To The Gates Of Apocalypse

surprised someone has heard of em

Not so my friend. at least not for me... i have a program called goldwave, and with this magical device i can disect any track and even take a part of one song and put it with another piece of another song. I am cool.

Well, that wouldn't be a problem if the songs were actually interesting.

Regardless of their ability, sitting through and hour long song of a band with a particular 'style' is no doubt going to get on anyone's nerves.
