the only newer enslaved i enjoy is monumension and ruun. i did nt mind BtL, but isa and vertebrae are a chore to sit through, though isa does have some good songs.

mardraum, which to me, is their transition album, is very good.

blodhemn is the least best from their early period

Mardraum is certainly amazing! Apples and Oranges though. The transition made it dumb to compare the old to the new.

Isis is better than Morbosidad.

I've genuinely liked everything Enslaved has done. I prefer their old sound to the proggy stuff so I'd suggest Frost if you're only planning on getting one of those albums.

How essential is their split with Satyricon? Is it worth the price tag of $30 shekels? (1st press)

it's okay. a cheap looking release. both bands' second demo tapes. enslaved side is very primitive and pretty cool. satyricon side is better but the newly recorded bonus track sucks. i'd pay maybe $15 for it

the emperor/enslaved split is a much bigger priority if you don't have that yet

I never liked Isa, Ruun or Vertebrae at all. Someone just sounds wrong with these discs.

VV, Frost, Eld, Mardraum and Monumension I've heard and liked at some point, especially VV.

the problem for me is not necessarily the songwriting but that they sound extremely sterile and overpolished. there's no life or grit to them. "monumension" was great because it had that fuzzed-out, misty, 70's style production job, and i think the newer albums would work better sounding more like that one.

actually the songwriting is at fault too i think. it feels very much "okay now we play this riff 8 times guys then the next one", there's no element of surprise, just a thing, then another thing, then the first thing again. too computerized/mechanical. i wish everything about these albums was less rigid.
