I think Steve Vai isn't that great, he's a good player, but not a good writer, but I will not quit guitar because of this. I take my inspiration from Classical music, David Gilmoure, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Steve Wilson, John Haughm, Don Anderson, James Marshall Hendrix, etc.... so I am quite happy with that.... if you're not, then don't listen to me play.......
