why do you think minorities are less receptive towards extreme metal?

I've pondered this and I think religion is one of the main reasons

however, I want to know what everyone else's thoughts are on this.

(leaving in a second - waiting for my ipod to charge a bit more)

rock music in generally is portrayed as a white man's thing IMO in our society

that's a big part of it IMO

This is actually a good question. I really would have to think about it before I made a thoughtful post, but the way I see it i goes both ways. You dont see many minorities as metal fans or in metal music at all; I remember it was a big deal when I found out the Killswitch Engage singer was black.

It depends on your surroundings and and time you get into music, like me for instance i'm chicano and i live in socal. Growing up i heard everything from mexican music (because thats what my mom and grandparents listened to- i hate this shit by the way), early hard core punk and ska (because thats what my youngest uncle listened to), oldies and funk because (thats what my cholo uncles listened to). My older brother was a metal head/ skater from the late in the late 80s. I on the other hand grew up around g's so i listened to a lot of g rap from the early 90s. My youngest brother who just turned 20 is really into the metalcore/ emo thing.

I guess I was raised to like metal, sort of. My dad always loved ac/dc and other 80's bands, and played them all of the time. My uncle is basically a metallica worshipper, and I was around him all the time. I had a cousin that played drums in various glam bands. I was exposed to a lot of that stuff. But my family is very religious, so I dont know how I ended up a black metal fan.

See, this is how I was raised. And for once I agree with bigdave, racial role is a big part of our society. Certain people are raised to, or feel like they should like, think, or do certain things.

so much great spanish music and hip hop out there though

too bad the mexican kids are too stupid to realize that and opt for worthless crap like "reggaeton"

oh god you do not even realize how much I despise reggaeton, and I don't even live in a latino area.

Well isn't there a large metal scene in South America? but besides that it is probably because metal is mostly based off of the European culture so it is harder to identify with metal if you are a minority.

another that I can't wrap my brain around is the 'wigger' phenomenon. you don't see black dudes walking around acting like white dudes, now do you?

Minorities tend to stick together and try to be different from whites. Most minority music before rap was seen as uncool by all the young people until RAP came out. MTV ditched metal, replaced it with rap, and the rest is history.

I'd imagine if metal got airplay like this in the u.s. there would be a lot more fans. YouTube - Torture Squad - Horror And Torture (Ao Vivo Gordo Freak)

I haven't slept in a couple of days, hope I made sense.

this quite ironic considering the amount of latinos and blacks present in metal nowadays.
