I guess I was raised to like metal, sort of. My dad always loved ac/dc and other 80's bands, and played them all of the time. My uncle is basically a metallica worshipper, and I was around him all the time. I had a cousin that played drums in various glam bands. I was exposed to a lot of that stuff. But my family is very religious, so I dont know how I ended up a black metal fan.

See, this is how I was raised. And for once I agree with bigdave, racial role is a big part of our society. Certain people are raised to, or feel like they should like, think, or do certain things.

Cool, I don't know how I go the "metal gene" . Both my parents hate metal and are into country and Southern Rock along with some classic rock, neither one of them understands why I like it. So I wasn't raised on metal at all, just found it. No one in my families likes it either except me.

I would guess that minority groups listen to certain styles more out of a drive to feel belonging in a world they are largely alienated from. In any social environment, minorities cling together and flock to stereotypical traits to gain acceptance and security from the white world they feel excluded from. You'll find that the people that don't give a shit and don't mind being solitary in their opinions will gravitate towards non-stereotyped things.

i think there is something to that. based on very limited knowledge, id say this is probably a starting point, or at least a factor in people's tastes.

i think it's entirely cultural. it will take too much discussion to prove my point and i really cbf'd explaining it atm. but if you think about the general underlying themes of any genre of music, you can see where particular interest is gathered.

musical taste doesnt have anything to do with someones race. It has everything to do with someones personality and taste. Also, the area a person comes from can play a big part in musical taste. Say for example, you grow up in alabama, and all you hear from your childhood years is country, and all your friends listen to country... you wouldnt have less respect for metal for any reason other than its not something you have ever really been exposed to.

I know people who are "minorities" who come from areas where rap is by FAR the music style of choice, and they hate it... they listen to thrash, and death metal.

There are just as many white people who have "less respect for metal" when ya think about it. Metal has never been, and never will be a mainstream thing.

I'm sorry but I think this is a load of horsehockey. What our ancestors listened to has nothing to do with what we listen to. As for why minorities don't listen to metal as much? They already have a music genre! Obviously not every minority is going to listen to rap or latin music (in face numerous California and Texas based bands have latino members), but it is much easier to find a genre for you if their already is one prevalent in your culture. I think, as others have said, it is more upbringing/cultural than race based. If it was race bases than why would we have such a huge South American scene?

I'm getting tired of the "blame Whitey" mentality. Whites are the only race that outlawed slavery, which still exists in Israel, Africa, and various Oriental countries. Less than ten percent of the White population owned slaves who were also slaves to tribal leaders in Africa who sold them to Whites and Jews. Other White Americans didn't want Africans in the country because they lost out on paid labor that blacks were forced to do. It's similar to American companies hiring illegal immigrants at practically slave labor in our current society. White nations give blacks and other minorities welfare, free housing, and food stamps; White nations help blacks feel better about themselves by setting up political correct rules and guidelines for Whites and only Whites to follow; Whites are forced to follow affirmative action policies that yes, have hurt their companies in many cases. Whites who are physically victimized by blacks are ignored by the media who never labels these crimes as racist; yet, the black community goes into a violent uproar when a black makes charges, even bogus charges against Whitey while the media is all over the story screaming racism at every corner. Let's not forget about the blacks who get away with violent crimes because of black racial spokesmen like the "reverends" Jesses Jackson and Al Sharpton who are only interested in furthering their own political careers and making big bucks. White nations pour billions annually into third world nations. If it was the opposite, do you really think these same nations would help out poor White countries or have their people lay down for the victimized White person to create a pseudo claim that "all races are created equal." Is anyone else familiar with study after study has proven races are biologically different? Is anyone else aware our pc society tries to suppress these studies? Yea, Whites should stop fucking blacks by taking back the health and educational systems we set up in Africa; we should stop giving blacks in the U.S. chance after chance to better and sustain their lives; and we should most definitely stop giving blacks excuse after excuse for their notorious violent behavior and not being able to improve their own lives ("it's everyone else's fault, but mine"). I would say that it's primarily derived from the blues and included some classical influences later on. Not to mention the obvous punk influence on thrash.

It's not instinctual... it's cultural/societal.

Instinctual was the wrong word, but music is partially rooted in race due to biological differences between the races. I never discounted culture and society with everything tying in with one another.

I think most people are forgetting that there would be no metal without blacks. They brought blues and jazz and eventually rock and roll to this country, all three of which play important roles in metal today. While I won't deny that culture is a big influence on musical taste, I really think it's primarily a personal issue for most people. I used to listen to popular crap, and I honestly never liked it much, but it was just "the cool thing" to listen to. Kill the Christians? As for biological differences between races, you're quite far of indeed my friend. The fact of the matter is there is no post or pre-reproductive isolation between any 'colour' races of Homo sapiens sapiens. The molecular divergence studies clearly show minimal variation as you would expect from endemic populations. Let's not forget, before the discovery of grand transport, most human communities were quite isolated and thus lead to slight variation in response to environmental factors. However such changes did NOT affect the overall gene pool, and gene flow is not restricted between 'colour' races. As for whether minorities are less receptive towards metal, there's no possible way to say. Metal will always be a minority genre, where certain people from a certain society will gather. No matter the race or religion, Metal usually appeals to those who want a break from the norm.

I don't think Hispanics are less receptive towards metal. Brazil and Mexico both have significant metal scenes, particularly the latter. Asia also has a healthy metal scene, particularly Japan and Korea. I can't think of many African metal bands not from South Africa (only Neblina, Crackdust, and Wrust come to mind).
