Why in every Opeth review do i read............

I've never, ever heard of computer generated growls. Maybe they mean growls with effects over them, but even those are uncommon, because they sound like shit.

I hear it sometimes in nu-metal and other aggressive music that isn't quite to the extreme metal level. Like Neil said, it's just distortion. It's like when someone yells over a phone or an aircraft radio or something like that. Listen to Otep (or don't). They use it like crazy, plus the music sucks ass, so there won't be any inconvenient conflicting thoughts like "well, I don't like this technique, but the music is actually pretty good."

has anyone ever heard the band dope? their older stuff was terrible when it came to this. his voice was so watered down with effects...all the time...i just wanted to die. i also wanted to die listening to the rest of the band...so i guess that worked out pretty well.

deftones are great. they are quite different from an average nu-metal band. they ahve some very atmospheric stuff. check out their "white pony" album and esp. tracks like "digital bath" and "knife prty" (yes thats how the name is spelled :) )

Not have I only heard of them. They are the only band in which I bought a cd from and sold back to the record store! Simply awful!

P.S I hate the deftones

^ haha i only did that with one cd too. actually, it was a dark tranquillity cd. i believe it was Projector. i put it in, and i was like " ....wtf??" it was pretty bad, so i just drove back to the store, and said i got the wrong cd, i'm gonna get something else, haha.

Arch Enemy - Anthems of Rebellion have tons of shitty effects on the vocs

true but arch enemy is still worth listening to, unlike, say, otep...what's up with that name anyway? is that a lame attempt to rip off opeth?

Projector rocks \m/!!! You commited Dark Tranquillity blasphemy my friend! :p

If you didn't like that album by them try "The Gallery". It slays all other melodic death.

i seem to be the only one who has no problem with digital growls us such. where's the problem. you call it cheating. distortion is by that definition also cheating except tr00 tube-distortion.

still i agree digital growls dont sound as good as all natural ones...

Please bear with this question, but I assume you're not counting growls with effects on them like "Demon of the Fall" and "By the Pain I See in Others"? I mean, I think those effects were quite appropriate to the songs...

afaik the growl itself is still natural...

well it's not like it was my first time hearing them, i had already had damage done, which i liked a lot. i also have Haven and Mind's I, on my computer. i'm not into DT, i like them, but projector was like fucking techno with pianos and shit, and i just wasn't feeling it.
