nu metal. i dont care if you didnt add it i'm voting for it anyways!!!! and well if you make me vote for somthing else i would say technical metal ONLY because the majority of the bands only solo during their songs. and while thats cool that they can solo really well, that shouldnt be the whole song

I would have voted "prog" but chose "other" instead because I wouldn't consider the examples of Arcturus or Opeth to be prog metal - perhaps more Avante Garde metal?

In any case, I hate bands like Spocks Beard, Pain of Salvation, Flower Kings, Ayreon, Shadow Gallery, and Devin Townsend. The whole progressive jazz-fusion-wank metal element is disasterous in my opinion and just pollutes my CD collection.

Get me near Neurosis and a hate crime usually ensues. That fucking band makes my ears bleed. I hate it. And for awhile there in the mid, late nineties, they were on so many tours that I went to. It was horrible.

I've seen them like 6-7 times already, and boy does that suck ass when youre forced to see a band that you detest, and on a fairly, semi-regular basis (relatively speaking, of course). There's not always a bar to escape to, either. So, my vote obviously went to crapcor...I mean, Noisecore. My brain is simply not capable of comprehending and understanding their music. Call me a lesser man for it, but thats the goddamn truth. Ish.

I know this thread is just asking for categorical debate, but are you implying that Iced Earth are power metal?!

Unfortunately I left out a couple obvious choices like "Traditional Metal" and/or "Classic Metal", but I think most people seem to be grouping a lot of these bands in with power metal.

Moderator (if you're listening): Please add these to my poll.

Thrash (i.e. Slayer, The Haunted)
Traditional Metal (i.e. Iron Maiden, Iced Earth)

I just noticed somebody voted Melodic Death Metal. Not to be picky, but it would be interesting to know why.

For the record, I voted Power Metal. I just can't understand that genre. They all sound the same to me.

Vienyard. I'm a HUGE noisecore fan, but I respect your opinion.

@npearce: I'll stick up for Power Metal here! Here is a list of bands that probably all belong to the category of power metal:

Blind Guardian
Angra
Edguy
Gamma Ray
Stratovarius
Rhapsody
Elvenking

I'm not sure if you're familiar with any/all of them but they are all quite distinct and at the top of their league. Granted - they were all spawned from Helloween, and of course Iron Maiden, but they have their own evolved trademarks now.

Of course I respect your opinion if you don't like power metal, and indeed there are a lot of crap power metal bands that sound so 'formulaic', but I thought I'd provide some thought on the matter.

P.S. I purposely did not list Hammerfall - I think they contribute very little to any genre, let alone power metal. Just my opinion though.

I was the first to vote for brutal death metal! I haven't heard Nile or Cryptopsy, but I've heard Cannibal Corpse and I think that goes under that banner as well, and they S-U-C-K!!! Muddy riffs where it's impossible to find heads or tails, aggression for aggresions sake, bad songs, NO meldoy (and if there is it's terrible) and so on!
I haven't heard any noisecore as far as I know, but if it's like Anal Cunt without the funny songtitles, maybe I should have voted for that. "Flowershop guy" is great, because of the crazy chorus, but the other songs I've heard by them is 100% crap and noise!
I don't know if I've heard any grindcore either, but if it's Anal Cunt as well, then...
I wouldn't call Opeth & Arcturus progressive metal either. I would put stuff like Dream Theater in there. They're under technical, but I think that's more or less the same. Dream Theater might be more technical than other band in the progressive genre though. I haven't heard much progressive metal.
