Your favourite guitar solos

sweeping generalizations like this don't make sense. It all depends on the style, the band, etc.

Sometimes you're right... they are out of place, awkward, don't add to the song. Sometimes they enhance the song greatly.

I agree with this, there is no 'most important part' to a metal song, or any song. It's how the constituent parts meld together, and the atmosphere that they create, that are most important to me.
 
Most solos are too long and struggle to create some kind of melody and/or atmosphere for me. It is just following (very repetitive) common intervals up and down the fretboard. No time for the notes to ring out and do something to me. That's how I see most solos.
 
Allan Holdsworth's solo on Joint Ventures is one of my favorites. It's his style, but really over a Jens Johansson backing, which is freaking sweet, plus the keyboard solo that follows it is the best keyboard solo ever, just about. This is style.
