Well, theres different kinds of "hate" in lyrics. Take DEVILDRIVER just for example, their lyrics are mostly about turning inner hate and rage into a tool to use against whatever or whoever your demon may be. To overcome and let out the aggression that everyday life throws at you. Facing all the things that try to destroy you and your dreams.
Then you got SLAYER, who hate everything and make a mockery of "hate" itself by marking religion (Xtianity mostly) as the enemy. I do agree w/ Slayer's view of religion. I wouldn't say it's hate, just a subtle smack in the face to what this world has become both politically and religiously.
Then you have EMINEM, a rapper who raps about dicing his wife into pieces, commiting suicide, and putting gerbals up his ass. Is this "hate"? Yeah he hated his wife enough to chop her up (in the music) and he faced more controversy and ridicule than any metal band I have known of to date.

It's not limited to METAL. hell, even Johnny Cash sang about killing his girl. Hate and violence will always be part of music since music is an expression of our inner self and the world around us. It's an extension of how we feel and as long as the governments dont lobotomize us all it will never go away, and it never should.

Indeed. What's more important is how effectively the message is conveyed in a form of art, rather than whether or not you agree with that message.

Yes, agreed. It annoys me for example, how some people, in the context of Black Metal that is, state that they care for nothing but the music. But the fact is that the subjective expression, combined with art and presentation all fuse to make Black Metal the kind of art that it is. To not recognise the non-musical characteristics, which are just as much a part of the expression as the music itself is, is sheer folly.

Just imagine a band calling Odin a wuss, suggesting that everyone should be a gay Christian, and demanding that all guns be destroyed and heathens put to death.
 Pretty sure Anal Cunt have conquered that already. I dont pay much attention to lyrics either. If the music's good...Im attentive. I cant even think of many racist metal/punk bands out there. Skrewdriver was a nazi band a friend introduced to me awhile back but the music was so awful it didnt matter either way. The only lyrics I really pay attention to lately are Amon Amarth and Opeth.

Yes because:

"Above the steaming jungle
Lies snowy heights of honor
Foundations of empire are laid
On sweating backs of my pals slaves"

Is a perfect example of 'great' lyrics.
But at least the music is worthwhile.

Well, not that song so much. But the lyrics to songs such as Heirs to Perdition, Archaic Invincibility, Ten Lost Tribes, etc. are great.

Lyrics about girls and relationships - when done well - can be pretty cool, Agalloch's entire album Pale Folklore is based upon a failed relationship of 2 years - the lyrics are really quite well done.

i'm just wondering about your opinions. i personally don't care because i don't listen to lyrics anyway, and especially not if the band has harsh vocals. if the band has clean vocals which i can actually understand, i might avoid them but whats the point in avoiding a band because it has hateful lyrics when i won't even be able to decipher them in the first place?

yea, i'm the same as you. I don't like hateful lyrics. A lot of the time, you see it in their covers, and song names, even if you can't actually decipher their lyrics. I stay away..

I dislike it when people say, "I can't understand what he is saying" becuase what do you do when you listen to a band who speaks in a foreign language? You can't understand what he is saying in that sense either.

I like relationship lyrics as long as they aren't done in an amateurish way.

anyone who answered yes is a retard. nearly all metal is hatefull and angry. pick a topic and atleast one band is hatefull towards that topic. shit, i bet there is a band solely devoted to promoting hate against pink bunnies...

well, that still doesnt change my answer to the poll, but i understand.

seriously though, songs about murder and death are just hate songs towards humans.

Saying that music is neutral seems senseless; it only appears neutral if you ignore the context in which it has been placed. Calling the music of Skrewdriver "neutral" is like calling the words in Mein Kampf "neutral". You can enjoy the structure, design, delivery, etc., but ignoring the meaning behind those words/music doesn't make it go away.

Personally I do avoid music that promotes values that I am opposed to or don't greatly appreciate, such as the hyper-materialism of much pop music or the melancholic wussiness of Opeth and Agalloch. I guess I don't have the selective perception of many here, I simply can't enjoy music that goes against what I believe. I can appreciate it as art if it's well done, but I don't see how one can get enjoyment out of listening to someone shouting at them how much they suck and need to die.

I really fail to see how Agalloch are "wussy", beyond Pale Folklore at the very least (which even then I'd have to laugh because it is such a stupid and meatheaded thing to think that expressing ones feelings about a failed relationship is wussy.) Sure the music is made with sadness and melancholy in mind - but take The Mantle for example, it is largely based upon Cherokee folklore (a culture I doubt anyone would call "wussy") and Ashes follows suite with the folklore based lyrics and what not -

I have no issue with someone disliking them, but your reasoning is quite off - if not outright based in ignorance or massive misunderstanding.
