this is far better than Awaken imo

Different too, maybe you'd like it better. Maybe not.

Yes...far better indeed. Guess they're just not for me.

I tried No Exit, Perfect Symmetry, Parallels and APSOG before I just gave up after repeated listening to each. Parallels is clearly the most accessible but rather bland...just not for me. Maybe something is going on there but if I can't listen to it, I can't be bothered.

I concede. Maybe it's just so irritating to my ear that I can't hear what anyone perceived as inventive or progressive. I can't get past just how bad and annoying it sounds to me to study it to that level.

I really gave this band a real college try, but never got past that it's just not pleasing to me in any form. That posted youtube clip brought it all back...I couldn't get through a minute of it...the proverbial nails on the chalkboard.

Not meant to insult anyone, just my honest personal opinion.

Count me out, delete my posts...carry on!

Of course - I am not going to go around saying what tastes are good or bad. I could see why John Arch would sound annoying. And I do think that even in AtG the band still had a lot of growing to do. But it really did change the way I thought about metal when I first heard it.

APSoG Pt. IX is a great ballad...there's a little riff in there taken from Opeth's Orchid album, too (at 2:53) - dunno if that was influence or a direct tribute or what.

(in no particular order)

Pain of Salvation: The Perfect Element
Pain of Salvation: One Hour by the Concrete Lake
Symphony X: V
Symphony X: The Odyssey
Sympyony X: Divine Wings

Frost*: Milliontown
Anathema: We're Here Because We're Here
Anti-Depressive Delivery: Feel. Melt. Release. Escape.
Lemur Voice: Divided
Dream Theater: Images and Words
Opeth: Still Life
Opeth: Ghost Reveries

Porcupine Tree: The Incident
Katatonia: Viva Emptiness
Circus Maximus: The 1st Chapter
To-Mera: Delusions
Beyond Twilight: Section X
After: Hideout
Alias Eye - A Different Point
Leprous: Tall Poppy Syndrome

There are plenty of albums I could swap in and out, but this is a pretty good list for now.

I agree with schenkadere about Fates Warning - I was never able to get into their old stuff, which was due mostly to their singer at the time. I don't care if his phrasing was inventive; I still found him to be incredibly annoying. The song that Postulate posted made me cringe.

I'm not hearing it... which Opeth song was it taken from?

When Dream and Day Unite

One of my favorite DT albums due to the fact that the singer is not LaBrie.

I'll have to listen to the album again...the songs aren't different or interesting enough for me to remember them separately. It's during an acoustic section, though.

^^ I love tons of stuff on that list, which makes me want to check the stuff I don't already know.

And Ki is your favourite Devin album? That's really cool as I've probably played that album more than any other album by anyone during the last 2 years... I'd still put it behind Ocean Machine though.

That Green Carnation album is great... unfortunately, ALMOST completely ruined by the terrible section near the middle. You know which one I'm referring to...

Is it as bad as the story of the HARE...who lost his SPECTACLES?!

(and by bad I mean incredible)

It is, at the moment :)
My favorite Townsend album changes like every month. Ocean Machine is probably my 3rd favorite at the moment. A few months ago I would probably have Ziltoid as one of my top 3.
