Some of the lists I've seen have puzzled me. Trust me, Cannibal Corpse and Cryptopsy are not essential bands. You don't need the Death discography either.

1) The Chasm- Deathcult For Eternity: The Triumph
2) Atheist- Unquestionable Presence
3) Miasma- Changes
4) Demilich- Nespithe
5) Demigod- Slumber of Sullen Eyes
6) Therion- Beyond Sanctorum
7) Necrophobic- The Nocturnal Silence
8) Nocturnus- The Key
9) Golem- Eternity: The Weeping Horizons
10) Arghoslent- Incorrigible Bigotry
11) Massacra- Final Holocaust
12) Cenotaph- Riding Our Black Oceans

Sorry, 10 wasn't enough.

I have to agree with you on that... CC and Cryptopsy are not essential. Maby the first Death releases but not the later ones, their simply not any good.

I've always failed to see any value in Cryptopsy's work.
They might not be an easy listen, but I am still looking for a song by some other band that could give me the same feelings as "Cold Hate, Warm Blood" does, even after hundreds of listens. If their purpose was to write a metal song of the decade, they met it perfectly.

I didn't think it was very special at first either... it just grew on me, especially the climax towards the end of the song built around the acoustic passage. I don't know why I like it, but I know I am not the only one who does. It's a classic.

1. Suffocation - Pierced From Within
2. Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines
3. Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
4. Dismember - Like An Everyflowing Stream
5. Behemoth - Zos Kia Cultus
6. Decapitated - Winds Of Creation
7. Entombed - Clandestine
8. Dying Fetus - Killing On Adrenaline
9. Carcass - Necroticism
10. Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus

Yeah, it's an awesome song, a total standout track. It is definitely one of my favorite songs.

Why am I the only one who just hears Cryptopsy as being relatively wank NYDM? The tempo changes are random and do nothing except show off their technical ability. Vocals aren't particularly interesting. Harsh, annoying drum production. Badly structured. Etcetera bloody etcetera. I admit that most of the stuff I've heard is from 'None So Vile', but isn't that generally considered as being their 'classic'?

Production is dissonant and shrill, it's also replete with earsplitting treble spikes. There's an annoying amount of bass slapping. Vocals are decent, talent is displayed at times but the performance is generic overall. They'd be acceptable if the music was better. Songs are devoid of structure and direction. Tempo changes are inexplicable, they exist merely for the sake of it. Drumming is the standard blast-fill, sure it's done capably but who really cares? The release is energetic, but it grates on the listener's nerves over an extended period of time.
