2008 AFL Thread

It seems a bit of a silly idea to me. The Swans are doing pretty well these days, but I can't see ho a second team would work. People say the Gold Coast is more of an Aussie Rules area than a rugby league one; is that correct?

Geelong :tickled:

...I believe the idea of the new teams is to have a home game played in Sydney and in QLD every week as in Adelaide and WA, which in turn should help to get people into the sport. I was always under the impression the Kangaroos would become the second Sydney side, but alas. At least I don't feel stupid having to call them "The Kangaroos" rather than north now.

The Gold Coast RL teams didn't work because the Broncos muscled them out of the competition, and they were less than competitive. Even when the Seagulls had Wally Lewis playing for them they couldn't get into gear. The Titans has a good side and the circumstances this time are a lot different. As far as a second Sydney AFL side goes, I really can't see how it will work. Both the Swans and the Lions were re-located Melbourne sides, so they already had a history. There's still a lot of old South Melbourne fans who barrack for the Swans and I think it's the same with Fitzroy fans. But look how long it took to establish those sides in their new cities. Starting a new side from scratch in a city where AFl is still called aerial ping-pong in precisely the area where they want to start it just isn't going to work. It would be like starting a South Melbourne NRL side and putting it in Moorabbin.

Blitzy, the club that trains at Arden St is called North Melbourne Football Club again, with the nickname of the Kangaroos, as of this year.... :)

You still get lots of South Melbourne fans at Swans games down here. Same with poor old Fitzroy fans at Brisbane Loins games.

but they wont be creating any new fans initially, thats just a way get getting twice as much money out of the fans they already have.

Would a fan of the swans pay to go and watch there rivals play? I dont think so, and as gore stated ealier it took 20 yrs for the swans to get established in sydney. I dont think the AFL can afford to persist that long waiting for the fruit of thier labour to be produced. The AFL is going to have to do some serious work to get even something like crowd figures they would need to make this whole thing viable

the only a-league club that is currently making a profit is the melbourne victory. Thats on the back of playing at the dome and having crowds over 45,000 each week. the other 7 clubs with crowds on 15000 are still running in the red 3 years later. I cant see the AFL allowing that to happen for too long.

Victory only get crowds like that for the odd game. Usually it's about 25,000 or so.

I don't like new clubs anyway. No history!

Barry Hall, 7 match suspension, broken wrist, out for 5 matches - to be served concurrently...

Haha I want to hear his mum on radio now. :)

Looks like Kerr might be screwed!

Nice to see Chad Cornes out for a few weeks. Knob.

WTF - Daniel Kerr only got 3 weeks. He frigging headbutted Scott West, and already had a bad record. Yet last year Steven Baker got 7 weeks for backing into a player?!
