Any one here religious?

Exactly.
People think me to be bigoted, I just see it as caring more about human beings than a deity who likely doesn't exist.
Religion is constantly used as a tool to do great evil on a level of basic human interaction and I have a huge problem with that.
You want to fix a problem, you attack the source with the aim of removing it completely, and religion is the source of the problem.

The basic tendencies of the human race is the central problem, religion is just a symptom of peoples weakness and desire for power

Yeah, of course, that and the desire for all the answers to life's biggest questions in a clear, concise way, rationality or feasibility be damned, but the death of organised religion would be a massive, massive step forward.

It's always been like this for me...

Norse: "I worship Odin, he is my god"
Roman: "I worship Jupiter, he is my god"
Greek: "I worship Zeus, he is my god"
Christian: "I worship....um....GOD!! And he is bigger than your gods, because he's just called GOD!"

which reminds me a lot like....

Kid 1: "I'm Hanna Montana's biggest fan"
Kid 2: "I'm Hanna Montana's biggest fan"
Kid 3: "No, I'm Hanna Montana's biggest fan"
Kid 4: "I'm Hanna Montana's biggest fan TIMES INFINITY, PLUS 100!!!"

Just seems like a big one-up attempt to feel superior, and everyone latched onto it easily.

Trying to preach to atheists about religion is like encouraging someone to join a cult, or sign up to amway or some bullshit pyramid scheme. An atheist preaching to a monotheist is trying to save and educate him. Given the intellect required by each party to hold those beliefs, one could argue that it's impossible for that to happen. Studies do show that people with lower iqs are more likely to be religious than those with a high iq.

Lloyd: You can't do that!
Harry: Can too!
Lloyd: Cannot, stamped it!
Harry: Can too, double stamped it, no erasies!
Lloyd: Cannot, triple stamped it, no erasies, touch blue make it true. [puts his hands over his ears and sings]
Harry: No! No! You can't triple stamp a double stamp! You can't triple stamp a double stamp, Lloyd! You can't triple stamp a double stamp!

Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: It transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural and spiritual; and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity. -Albert Einstein

If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism. -Albert Einstein

Dude, really, I know you're always looking for something to be pissed off at, but religion has also been the motivator and source of so much good in the world as well (humanitarian aid, homeless shelters, etc.), and tons of good people have been religious (including my mother, whom I love and respect); universal 100% hatred of anything without exception IS bigoted and ignorant.

Agreed big time.

All things on earth can be used for evil, but not everyone is gonna choose that route.

HAHA.

That's pretty much why I stay away from debates. I love debating if there's respect, but if there's not I don't start it.

Im christian but I am not religious religion is just an excuse for man to try and be God and that is wrong. I live by the word of God not man.

Are you trying to say you are spiritual, but don't follow an organize religion (don't go to church, etc)? Religion isn't an excuse for people to be God, but it often gets to be an excuse for justifying their actions in the name of such god, often times manipulating the weakness of others for their personal gain. That...is wrong.

The "word of god" thing goes back to the original chicken vs. egg question: Is it the word of god, or is it the word of men who wanted people to think it was the word of god. I believe if it was truly the word of god, it would be hardwired into our systems and we wouldn't need a shitty book to misinterpret everything. It wouldn't be your consciousness debating with you on whether or not you should perform an action, it would be "god" telling you perform the action...which you (one) would do.

That further goes down the path of: if "god" had hardwired such things into people, then he also integrated their destined path, meaning "god" created sociopaths and they should be allowed to commit their horrible actions because "god" made them that way...because "the word of god" is telling them to do this. I could keep going, snowballing this into as big of a monstrosity as you can possibly dream up.

See why I don't understand that belief...that "the word of god" is what leads people? This misunderstanding on my behalf is generally met with unguided answers with little substance other than "just go with it, because thats how god wants it".
