Anybody else think that the word "nu-metal" lost its meaning by now?

Well, I've never seen Fight Club, so I don't get it.

And besides, this thread's about nu-metal, and why all of you uptight elitists hate it...

Herm... I hate it because it does not sound good... I don't like the music at all... it is not my thing.. I love every kind of metal from death to black to power to grind to progressive to folk tosymphonic to goth to some doom, heavy, instruemntal... all acorss the entire spectrum... I am not uptight by any means, I am one of the most well balanced, open-minded lsitener to metal in all existance... I don't like thrash very much, I don't like rapcore at all, and I do not like Nu metal... it is as simple as that... it has nothing to do with being an "uptight elitist" that is a stupid assumption.. I have no obligation whatsoever to listen to nu metal... I jsut do not liek it.. I'm sure the case is similar for many people.

Nu Metal is bands such as Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, Evanescence, and many others, but I think you get my point... Nu Metal is a music for the younger genration, follwing much in the vein of Metalcore and Punk in it's "I am mad, I am sad, Feel sorry for me, I am Mad" Now of course there are exceptions for every genre and some are good, but overall the genre is not mything.. I need more from a band, in technical skills and in lyrical and conceptual content... if you have any bands that may fit this kind of criteria, than go ahead and name e.. I have not found such yet

That's all I wanted to know. Some examples of nu-metal.

Heh, heh...

See, I don't think Killswitch Engage are nu-metal. Or Evanesence. This proves something I was suspecting.

Nu-metal is a term applied to bands that the majority of metal fans dislike and think 'mainstream fags' do like.

There is no real numetal genre. It's jst a hazy cloud of smoke containing everyone's dislikes.

For instance, everyone KNOWS Cannibal Corpse are death metal, and that Emperor are black metal, and that Overkill are thrash.

Since a majority of fans dislike bands like Disturbed and Linkin Park, they have been dubbed nu-metal. Because they are a mixture of styles, streamlined so as to be accessible, and have achieved success. They can't be identified as anything else, like rap/hard rock/no solos/electronics/semi-brutal vocals/clean singing/angst-filled lyrics/gothic textures/cursing/mainstream music. So, they're just called nu-metal.

I personally like disturbed a lot, but don't likeLinkin Park. They were okay for a while, but i got tired of them.

The term should be thrown out. Because no one can agree on what it is...

Don't worry Perpetual Demise. I don't think you're an elitist. I just like some bands you dislike. but I find it really mean when metal fans just go an say nu-metal is shit, because i definitely like something about it, and yet I listen to doom, death, black, power, progressive, thrash, funk, hardcore, and a lot of other styles of metal. I wish people would lighten up.

And, SOAD aren't nu-metal in my book. They're thrash.

Killswitch are melodeath/hardcore. I love them.

Evanesence I'm not crazy about. They're like alternative/goth-rock.

I totally agree.

Genres are a pain in your ass.

I meant in MY ass. Too. Yeah...

It just pains me when I come on here and mention the guy from Godsmack, and then have 500 people post, "That shithead can't sing for shit." or "They suck my cockhole!" I really like Godsmack. I don't go to a Brutal Truth or Dying Fetus thread and do that.

What I think is nu-metal? I beleive it has anything to do with the fact that there is somewhat of a guitar/bass or even a scream sound followed by the ever loving hip-hop or rap vibe from it. For example limp biscuit. As for the rest, i just say "crap" or "not crap". I brought this topic out because I hear people say that the new arch enemy album is nu-metal, its not, its just crap for those that think that.

I do believe that a few descriptions of nu metal are the less technical guitar and bass work, really detuned guitars, riding of the low E (or whatever tuning they're in), no or pathetic solo's, and natural harmonics seem to be part of many nu metal type songs.

Okay, that's good. But there are bands that aren't in that description that are great. Like Godsmack, SOAD, Mushroomhead, Sevendust, Puya, Mudvayne...actually Godsmack and Sevendust are pure metal, SOAD are thrash, Mushroomhead are some FMN/thrash-esque/symphonic/something, Puya is jazz/salsa/hiphop/metal and Mudvayne are funk/prog/metal, so I guess that leaves the sucky bands like No One, Adema, 40 Below Summer, American Head Charge, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Memento, Earshot, Trapt, and such.

Well then, except for Trapt, I guess I don't like numetal either. Why? Devoid of melody or catchiness.

I don't like any of those bands you named except SOAD, Puya, a little Godsmack and a few Sevendust songs. I think you nailed the sucky bands on the head though and those I do consider my stereotypical one string wonders. Haven't heard Trapt or Memento though.

Trapt has a huge single on the radio in the States called Headstrong...it's actually okay.

I think we've all proved that nu-metal as a genre doesn't exist. There's just a multitude of shitty bands that sound alike and a few good ones with a similar style, and they're just lumped together and hated by all.

Which is a shame, but i don't feel like a mainstream goth fucktard anymore, and that's always good. Usually anything that's nice and heavy with a beat or a groove pleases me greatly.
