I'm glad this topic came up. I have been a Tool fan since Undertow. They have been my favorite band since then. Aenima simply blew me away. I thought no one could touch them in terms of mood, feeling, emotion and talent. It simply took a comparison to Opeth from a Tool forum to intrigue me enough to give Opeth a try. I must say, Opeth is damn near tied with Tool now as my favorite band. No one hear can deny the similarities in song structures, time sigs, emotion, and others between Tool and Opeth. Yes, one is metal and the other is rock, but both are progressive and full of layers upon layers of complexity that require multiple listens to fully sink in and appreciate.

It's a shame that the popularity of a band dictates whether or not you like it. Good music is good music, all according to taste. If you like the music, fuck the other fans. Enjoy it for yourself. Don't do anything for anyone else.

It's not that big a deal. I like them, but it's just that the same fans that adore bands I truly dislike - is.. annoying :goggly:

Wow a lot of you people need to start listening to more bands it seems like.

"Tool has the best production values" Um, no they dont, not by a long shot.

"Tool's drumming is the best in music" Um, no, not even close to the best.

"Tool comes up with the most memorable and killer riffs" Are you being serious? Where do I even begin?

"Tool's live shows are the best ever!" That's simply not the case

"Tool has the most complex music ever!" I think that's a false claim as well. There really arent that many hidden messages.

Basically, this band has come up with a sound that not many other bands have, or have had in the past. For that, they deserve credit, and I do respect them because they have a big following, so they must be doing something right.

But, I still to this day don't believe all the hype. I even tried to sell Aenima, but unfortunately they wouldnt take it back.

I heard so much about this band, so I bought the album. Sat down, shut up, and listened to the album closely, and after the first song I was bored. The main riff is soooo boring and sooo repetitive. Can't get into them at all, and I suggest some of you expand your musical herizons.

"Can't get into them at all, and I suggest some of you expand your musical herizons"

Devy Metal, that's a pretty broad statement.

In the same post, you insinuated that not only does the majority of the board's users (most of whom have very broad taste) have 'small musical 'herizons,' but that their (*cough* OUR) opinions are less because of it.

I don't know... maybe it'd be easier to take you seriously if you indulged us with some examples of your 'broad 'herizons'... or maybe if you at least spelled correctly.

Liked all their albmus except Lateralus and even that is growing on me now...
Granted they are seeming to try too hard to 'sound like tool', I just wish the guitarist would come up with some different styled riffing. Don't care much for the screaming on Lateralus either...

Other than that they've stayed as one of my favourite bands while the rest of my taste have changed in metal. I wouldn't even cound them as metal in the first place, as it was before mentioned they're more like Pink Floyd

Tool were the band that really got me into music. I had only casually listened to music before I heard them. They changed my way of approaching bands and introduced me to a lot of new bands, as did Opeth. I don't place them above Opeth, but Tool will always have a place with me. It also took me a while to get into Lateralus, and I still haven't listened to it enough. I haven't listened to Tool in a while so maybe I'll have a Tool marathon one night. Ænima is one of my favorite albums ever and is always welcome in my cd player.

I suggest you all try to see them live...the visuals alone are worth going. I saw them last October, and they blew me away. I'm gonna try to catch them this tour also as I'd like to also see Tomahawk...gotta love Mike Patton. I seriously hope they tour with King Crimson again. I'd drive 1,000 miles to see that show. :D

I could see how Tool could just not interest someone, or bore them to death. But they don't for me. Oddly though, while being one of my favorite bands, I barely listen to them. I guess I have too many "better" favorite bands stealing the listening time. I wish they'd hurry up and make their next album, though.

There was a "Tool vs Opeth" post once on some Tool forum, and it got kind of nasty, until someone posted this huge essay comparing the two. Good read, actually. Made you appreciate both bands more. It's probably long gone.

mistor Impatient. I dont listen to tool as much as I used to either, but, i'm not expecting another album until around summer 2004. so you'll be waiting a while. A Perfect Circle is coming out with a new one soon though, it should be interesting.
