Bands you respect/appreciate but don't particularly like?

I can't think of any metal bands that fit this position. I would say I respect but don't like Led Zeppelin, though.

well if you're MORE musically inclined you'd rather NOT listen to tonal music as much.

to the trained ear, all you hear is

vi.... IV.... V.... vi.... /yawn

when you listen to death metal it's a break from automatically analyzing how shitty and uncreative 90% of tonal music is.

Dude, tell me it doesn't drive you crazy when you start seeing the predictability of four-bar patterns in songs to the point that you can start predicting when the riffs will change on songs you've never heard before.

I swear, studying music theory fucked up a lot of music I'd otherwise like just because I find myself micro-analyzing it. :bah:

haha i know man... I wish i could just be content with terrible music... if you're interested in the stuff I'm writing ATM I'll pm you some links... unfortunatly, It's music that I don't think is too complex, but it seems like it's still enjoyed more by educated than normal folk... but it's a pretty fun mixture I've got going on, and I'm allowed to be good and heavy, but then still be musical...

but what do I know, most people think tool is somehow complex and amazing.

SOME Tool is damn creative. I mean, hell, Schism is written in, what, alternating measures of 5/8 and 7/8? Plus on 10,000 Days there's those three tracks that layer into one gigantic song. But they're not "TEH MOST CREATIVE BAND EVAR" like some say, nor is Dream Theater.

My thing is, some music lends itself just fine to 4/4 time and standard progression, as long as the riffs are well written. I use, say, Red Fang as an example of that. Not gonna blow any minds, but it's SO fucking catchy and fun that the simplistic structure doesn't detract.

I guess it all comes down to whether the music itself seems to have any pulse or not. Bands like whateverthefuck Colin Marsten is in are all wankfests that are just showing off scales and time sigs with no purpose, so complex music isn't inherently better either. :p

Cannibal Corpse. I respect them as giants in the field of death metal and they've good work but it just doesn't give me that feeling.

Emperor
Cathedral (they're even more boring live, but I suppose I kind of respect them)
Kreator (they have a some decent songs but they have a good few worthless albums, they don't deserve to be regarded as better than Sodom, that's for sure)

I'm listening to rape of the bastard nazarene right now and I hear nothing wrong with it. I've seen you hate on them before. You mad about somethin' bro?

decrepit birth's new stuff in theory is pretty awesome, but I cant bring myself to get into it... I just jam out to and time begins.

opeth is a band that seems pretty cool that I never got into...

arcturus is a band that I should have a giant boner for, but I've never sat down and listened to their stuff through and through... even though I apparently write similiar in style, so why not!

as far as people mentioning nile, I love kollias hardstyle(I've got about 9873498734 posts on the GK forums) and I love nile hardstyle... but I havent been able to listen to much of anything other than in their darkened shrines... I like their newer stuff, but I find myself listening to in their darkened shrines the most... their latest album was pretty sick though...

permitting and kafir are pretty godly.

Akercocke (but this band is just complete and utter gayness. There's nothing to respect about the band at all.)

Clearly your homophobia is preventing you from enjoying the 'cocke.

But I think they're an excellent band. The Goat of Mendes and Words That Go Unspoken... are my favourites of theirs.

Dream Theatre, Children of Bodom. The latter are cool dudes, both bands have insane musicians in their ranks, both are pretty much living legends and there's really nothing wrong with their songwriting as far as that genre goes, but... I just never got into either of them. Same goes with any piddlywiddly music really (esp. Dragonforce) - I respect the musicianship, but I ain't feelin' it braaah.

Also: The Doors, Pink Floyd and the like. Complete respect for those undeniably epic tunes but they creep me the hell out for some reason. "Light My Fire"? Scary circus accordion music. I don't know. I already have goosebumps.

So "light my fire" creeps you out but you can listen to a genre that often involves graphic defilement of the human anatomy? :guh:

Children of Bodom, legends?... I don't know what to say.

Ever been to Finland? That's pretty much what they are over here, not to mention the godlike status Laiho enjoys with countless guitarists (and girlies). Whether or not I think of them as such is a different matter entirely :) Not my cup of tea tbh.

OH and might as well throw Stratovarius in there too (although after seeing this video of Tolkki interpreting some pretty deep feelings I may have to reconsider).

I think possibly two or three bands I listen to have that kind of lyrical content. :D But yeah, pretty much. Reckon it's more to do with the context I used to hear that stuff in though. That, and those 60s-style organ/accordion sounds just get to me. Ruined forever!

children of bodom is a pile of trash.

alexi is a god to the same people that think travis barker/joey jordison are gods.

i dont need to go into why alexi is a pile of shit, but I can solve this problem simply by linking you this: superior in every single way possible.

better in every... single... way.... better writer, better vocalist, and a much better guitarist both in ability and more importantly HE CAN PLAY HIS STUFF. alexi is one of the sloppiest piles of shit anyone has ever called a virtuoso.

:worship: necrophagist.
