Black Metal.

My copy of Fallen arrived today. I had not heard any of the music until today, as I chose not to stream or download any of it.

On first listen I really like it and I think I prefer it to Belus. Fallen seems like a more thought-out and cohesive album and it sounds very 'Burzum' to me. I'm not surprised by the softer approach at all, I'm not sure why some people are. Anyways, great album.

I also picked up Dornenreich's new album Flammentriebe. I've only listened to it once and I felt disappointed with it as nothing really stood out to me. However, I'll see if anything changes with repeated listens.

Good interview, I like how he doesn't put on a show and just acts like himself, a regular dude who happens to make black metal.

I stumbled across an interesting band the other day which might interest some of you.

Trails of Anguish were a short-lived Canadian band and their EP Scarred Memento is ten minutes of total mayhem. It has seriously some of the best drumming I've ever heard in BM, it is utterly thunderous and possesses a technicality rarely present or used well in this kind of music. The vocals are superb as well.

Couldn't find any of this EP on youtube but blogspot search will do the trick. Also, if anyone can recommend anything in a similar vein I would be most appreciative.

Canadian war metal? The description of the drums and the fact they're from Canada piqued my interest.Good to see some discussion other than Burzum going on here.

Not war metal... they seem to have that depressive/suicidal lyrical content and yet the music is blisteringly fast and aggressive. Quite the paradox. Also quite polished production. So I really have no idea how else to describe it. Just realised there's a second EP which I need to check out too.

I don't see why people rave about Countess, every time I try to listen to it I feel like punching someone in the face. The vocals are annoying, the songs are meh and the production makes it worse to listen to.

Actually you probably hold the majority opinion here. If you were basing your opinion solely on that song Jimmy...Dead posted, however, that entire album is not really representative of the Countess sound at all, and you should listen to more before you make up your mind. I'd be happy to offer recommendations if that were the case, although I don't suspect I would change your mind.

I actually have Blazing Flames of War, The Gospel of the Horned One, The Book of the Heretic and The Shining Swords of Hate. A couple of them are burnt off a friend because I couldn't find them anywhere on the internet, the rest are from distros. I keep listening with hope that it might "click" with me some time in the future, it hasn't happened so far.

edit: Checking out that Trails of Anguish stuff. Fuckin' awesome.

Three of those albums have really serious production issues, in case that wasn't obvious. You might like Heilig Vuur though at least, that seems to be the album that people not a fan of the band tend to gravitate toward as being good. Here's a few songs from that album, plus a couple of others:

I'm giving them a listen. The production is a little bit better. One thing I have to admit Countess does pretty well is the fact that the melodies, even though very Major sounding, sound sinister and kinda eerie.

Yeah, Countess have this weird appeal. Sometimes it sounds borderline silly.

What's the critique of Negative Plane on this board? A band from New York, who have 2 albums out. From 2006 "Et In Saecula Saeculorum" and from 2011 "Stained Glass Revelations." I favor the debut, but SGR is fuckin' excellent. Probably, the most unique BM band I've heard in a long while. Has a thrash/death style composition. You can sense the decrepit, dank and dark place of Castles or Cathedrals. Tremendous atmosphere. Curious as to what others think about this band.
