Black Metal.

Anyways, I'm ready to get serious about scooping up the essentials of first-wave black metal. I've got a list of prospects and I'm wondering what else I ought to acquire. I'll be making a good deal of money over vacation (plus all that textbook money) so a good deal of these albums should be within my possession. So far all I own is To Mega Therion, Apocalyptic Raids, Under the Sign of the Black Mark, and Blood Fire Death.

Bathory - Bathory
Bathory - The Return
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales/Emperor's Return
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Sarcofago - INRI
Sodom - In the Sign of Evil
Venom - Black Metal

So what else should I be on the lookout for?

Tormentor - Anno Domini
Mayhem - Deathcrush

Mercyful Fate - The Beginning
Vulcano - Bloody Vengeance
Mortuary Drape - Tolling 13 Knell (their highest quality album that is not a real pain in the ass to acquire)
Bulldozer - Day Of Wrath (or rather the Regenerated In The Grave box set)
Running Wild - Gates To Purgatory

Once you buy what other people have said try and get these. A bit of overlooked bands of that period.

Strid - Strid
Mock - Mock
Necromantia - Crossing The Fiery Path
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon
Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract
Sigh - Scorn Defeat

Don't be upset mate; I'm an acknowledged numb-skull when it comes to Black Metal. It's my Kryptonite! I really like the early stuff - you know, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate etc - but other than more a couple of bands, I can't really stand anything that's called Black Metal since 1990.

Is it just me or is Epheles extremely underrated? They easily belong in the top echelon of 'contemporary' black metal IMO. Aggressive as fuck, thick, foreboding atmosphere, and epic, dark melodies. Nothing original obviously, but they utilize the BM tools at their disposal remarkably well.

Yeah, they get a good amount of praise but I generally feel that they do get overlooked often times in the French scene to make room for bands like DsO, BAN, Alcest, Peste Noire, etc.
