Black Metal.

Hell Symphony is their best album, but Zjeveni is great too (as is The Temple In The Underworld, the rest isn't Black Metal).

Does anybody else really like Absu? I know they're not really a pure black metal band. More like blackened thrash or thrashing black metal. I'm really starting to appreciate The Sun of Tiphareth a lot. I've been listening to it for years and I've always thought it was okay; I always preferred the albums they released after that one. But for some reason this album just has a kind of atmosphere that they never recaptured on subsequent albums. Plus they're really good at capturing a very oldschool feel without seeming like a mere throwback. Anybody else like the Absu?

"Tara" is an awesome album. I think they pull off the death/thrash influenced black metal quite well.

I got the first album a few weeks ago after meaning to explore beyond Tara for years, and it fucking rules. Amazing album. Not Black Metal or really even Thrash, pretty much purely Death Metal, but it's stellar. I've heard scattered mp3s from the other albums years back, but I definitely plan on getting the rest of their discography next year.

Malignance, I need some more raw Black Metal. I'm talking more specifically about early second wave material, stuff like early Graveland, Ungod, Master's Hammer, Root, etc. Bands with a heavy focus on riffs, yet still with that second wave approach, almost between the first and second wave. Do you have anything like this to recommend me? Preferably stuff that's actually obtainable.

You may want to check out Wolfsmond.

I heard they have some highly intelligent, though pretentious, occult based music. I have been meaning to check them out for a long time.

Speaking of occult based metal may I bring up Katharsis? I was playing VVorldVVithoutEnd earlier today. I must say that album is fucking fast and abrasive as can be.

No I don't, I just love VVorldVVithoutEnd and I think it's one of the more interesting black metal albums in the last two years or so.

Absu - Tara is a great album.

BurningWitch - I know I should dig deeper, and I'm starting to do so.

Averse Sefira is a good example, a kickass band. They've released a special version of the "Homecoming March" CD, dedicated to brazilian fans, it's a great package.

I don't recall seing them mentioned here very often.

Is their early material different? I've only heard Tara and hated it.

Yes, Tara in my opinion, is the most focused and well produced out of all the albums. In their first two albums 'The Sun of Typareth' and 'Barathrum V.I.T.R.I.O.L' there is a much more apparent Death Metal influence, actually 'Barathrum' IMO is almost purely Death Metal. The 'Third Storm of Cyrathul is much closer to their black/thrash sound, but is not as well produced.
