Charlie Benante: "The hardest thing about this is choosing this guy over that guy or whatever, and for me speaking right now, the classic ANTHRAX lineup is, of course, from the mid-Eighties that created the records "Spreading The Disease" and "Among The Living". So it's almost obvious that's what people would want to see now. I mean, we've seen it. We've seen the difference between playing with Joey [Belladonna] and playing with John. There are way more people coming, and there's more excitement. So I'm not taking anything away from John at all, I'm just basically stating a fact."

All this from the guy who wanted Bush in the first place. Again, I say anything that comes from Scott or Charlies' mouths is lies. Nice way to say "screw you...and no thanks for helping us out after the Nelson Debacle".

Too bad they didn't realize this before writing Worship Music which is definitely more of a Bush era sounding album. Maybe the next time around they will do an album more like Among The Living which is what Charlie is claiming most people want to see.

It's not a shocker that Anthrax was far more successful during the Joey era. I guess it has taken these guys 20 years to figure that out.

Sorry Bushthrax fans that's just the reality. It's good to hear him finally admit it!

PS. I am sure Manthatfollowshell and Social Distortion are going to start accusing Charlie of being "Ironmaidenfan9"

You have a point in that their popularity was highest with Joey. But we all know the 90s really was troublesome to metal (Pantera being the possible exception). Charlie must feel like an ass, to have to bootlick Joey now.....and Scott even more so, as he was more vocal about his loving John, and slagging Joey. As I said, this band (Scott & charlie anyways) change their stories more than I change my undies (and that's quite frequent, I assure you).

I Don't believe one word that comes out of Charlie or Scotts mouth. I do however believe most of what Joey says.

If John Bush rejoined next week Charlie would say how they just had to say all of this to support Joey and get the record out but that they always thought John would be the best fit. Then they would go on to do GOTE 2

It sucks to not believe a word some people say but thats pretty much how it is with these guys

It's obvious that the Joey Era was more successful, but they had all the support back then too. We've had this debate before so I'll leave it there. I respect what you are saying though. With Charlie, I think his head says "Among the Living" and his heart says "SOWN/WCFYA". Obiviously they could not just quit on having some WCFYA influence on the new album because it's what they like, which proves they didn't sell out, or else why keep doing it if it doesn't sell?, well because they like it, and if the new album's a mix of old and new like peolpe say with Joey at the helm, well then everone's a winner if you ask me.

I agree. They change so often, that it's ridiculous. I really don't know why Joey agreed to come back.....I realize there will be some $$$ and fan accolades, but in a lot of ways, he has to feel a LOT bitter, with the shitstorm Scott & Charlie throw at him down through the years.....sometimes your self-worth and pride should keep a person from doing something like this. But hey, we all have to eat....and I would be a liar if I haven't sucked it up over the years doing I job I dislike, to keep the Blatz flowing.

Speaking of Pantera.........anyone see the pics of them from the Trendkill era?, some people say Anthrax had a "grunge image" check out the flannellets............sorry, a little OT........

Yeah....I always laugh at stuff like that. Eras influence people. Hell, I always thought grunge originated here in the UP (Upper Michigan) as people around here have ALWAYS worn flannel (even in the summer)!

Heh yeah.......Funny thing is though, I always though grunge was an image more than a musical style. To me it was Metal dressed in Flannels. When tight Black jeans weren't selling records anymore, they had to find another way. I actually hate the term "Grunge"............:yuk:

Rock and roll is rock and roll. The fashion will always change. I never really liked the "Seattle sound" but some of it was OK. It is what it is....I never thought Anthrax copied the "Grunge" movement, but who knows? There was that clip of Layne Staley's high school band covering Armored Saint, so maybe John Bush influenced them, and it came full circle?

Yes I agree, Anthrax did not Join the "Grunge Movement" Packaged Rebellion is all about that for all those that think Anthrax did. :D

It's not really lies. Feelings change with the seasons imo. Charlie can state his thoughts as 'fact' now since he witnessed the current Joey performances during the Big 4 and 'Clash 2' tours. It's natural to have different thoughts before and after you experience things.

Pay close attention to what he is saying. He is acknowledging what the fans want. That dose not mean thats exactly what he wants. He may prefer John to Joey. He is just stating that he can see that Joey is what it seems more people are wanting...

That about sums it up. That was my impression, too :D

To me grunge was the stoner bands that made it. They were all part of a scene where they would use heavy distortion and sludgey riffs.
