I'd put it to e4, more control over the central field, more flexibility for your other pieces. And the pawn is still easy to back up.

6: I used to do that, but lately i've found that control of the central field isn't really essential and that placing my pawn on e3 rather than e4 makes for a better-defended/defendable position while still allowing me to unleash my bishops and queen (b2-b3 is always a good move).

But by defending you are giving away your initiative to the enemy. And your other bishop will need an extra move to be set free.

I didn't get that initiative part. And no, if i do e2-e4 i'll still need something like d2-d3 or d2-d4 to free my other bishop, so it's the same number of moves.

Initiative - lead the way of the situation, take the other by his nose and make him react to your actions.

d4 and e4 give you a crushing control over the central squares, where the king is, while b2 only gives you a side action.

Imo, side action is underrated and center field is overrated.

Aha, i've got two real chessboards and several chess applications on my computer.

gimme one of those applications, I might be needing them if anyone else challenges me.

GNU Chess, Sigma Chess, the default Mac OSX chess application.... Hell, even Yahoo Chess works if you have two browsers and two Yahoo accounts.
